I played it back, thunder was heard about 5 seconds after the lightning. We were only about 1.5km from the planet. Listeining to the audio from the earlier bolt that I think prob hit it the thunder was about 3 seconds.

If sound travels 1 km every 3 seconds, then it would still take 4.5 seconds to travel 1.5 kms. :-k

The general rule has always been that (depending on air-temp and humidity), sound travels 1 km every 3 seconds, or 1 mile every 5 seconds. ;-)

Short video from the Darfield Thunderstorm

I've slowed down the cg at the end, still unsure if it hit or not.

I have been slack in pics, but that cell that blew up over our house, funnel cloud and non stop lighting and thunder for about 30 mins, and large pea sized hail for a short time. It was nuts.
