It's quite dark here.
It just shows you how thick the cloud is. :-k

The thunder may have gone but this is very much needed rain indeed, been very dry and warm here of late. Managed 10mm so far with 5mm falling in a 10min period from the edge of that cell Jamie was talking about (can only imagine what it would have been like in its core) Nice solid rain now falling with some heavy falls just to the south of here.

Win! Three very productive cells videoed. Should produce some good stills and I'll edit the video. Happy 8)

Went out to Kirwee and watched the slow buildup to my south, had good views on the cell which then developed over Greendale (or elsewhere, couldn't quite tell), did hang out near Kirwee for an other hour or so and then decided to go check what was going on towards Culverden. I stopped at Hawarden as despite a cell being there and developing, the skies were "messy" and it wasn't worth wasting film …

Last shot for the day : while closer to the cell's core I noticed some "vorticity" in the inflow. Don't know if it shows up too well on the shot, I edited it quite hard.

Yes. Pictures posted today were very much so of the development of today's weather with regards of the low that moved over us. Good on all that posted them.
I did see a weak funnel form to the west of here but by the time I grabbed my camera, it was folding itself back into the cloud.
Good drop of rain here, much needed.

Nice shots Ben and Mikey! Ben, you manage to get more square on to the cell we were also on.

This storm looked like it had good potential, one or two lightning shots and I would've been happy but bad luck and I managed none again! Lightning wasn't overally frequent (visible) though but heard a fair amount of thunder at one point.

Yesterday certainly produced the goods unfortunately this time I stayed where I was as I thought being in the higher potential area would be best, this meant I missed out on action even though I did go out briefly.
I think the key factor to why storms were in such a narrow area and didnt get going over north canterbury was the surface NW wind which stuck around until 3pm even the southerly was haulted over southern christchurch.
Thats the positioning of the low and where it crossed depended on the converging winds.
good on those who got the footage another sunday set up in the models this weekend.

Nice photos. Its good when convection can occur on a weekend.

Any reports of severe weather yesterday?

If you know what time it was we could sort out whether it's that "nipple" I found on my shot afterwards or not.

Seriously, just pure luck as I was about to move further inland …

Interesting, I would qualify yesterday's setup as "messy" with all sorts of clouds everywhere. I did find it hard to "read" what was going on sometimes … :?

Lightning still.
Sequence 01.png
It appears like its hitting the Fonterra Milk Plant at Darfield but I believe its behind it.

good catch!
(tallest thing around, so why not a direct hit)

A new form of pasteurisation perhaps? lol :D

Possibly just as well Fonterra's Darfield plant wasn't hit the day before as thousands turned up for the official opening of the world's largest milk powder drier. 8-o

Great photo! That bolt is a number of km beyond the milk plant though.

The missing ingredient in Sundays set up was upper flow.

Yup I tend to agree that this bolt is behind. The plant was hit, there phone lines were still out yesterday. We witnessed two cgs while at this viewpoint. The first I missed on film but it appeared to have been much closer and I think it was the one that hit the milk plant.

I dunno
that building is very large and very tall
its hard to put things into perspective
its alot further away than you think
compare it to the rows of pine trees, which look like a small hedge instead
i.e I reckon it is being hit
