Distant large white cloud bubbled up suddenly to my south.
Edit to add: another one to my NNE.

Yes. I can see it from here. Seems the incus part is broken off and drifting away to the south- east.

It turned easterly here about 15 minutes ago and I think it killed the structure..

Media doesn't help...
Radio weather reports are quite often wrong.
Some stations seem to tweak the forecasts to suit.Yesterdays local paper also warned of further storms for the wrong day.

I agree Deano and all MetService based forecasts I believe with radio stations.

it needs to get sorted, somehow....but god knows how. Its the umpteenth occasion in recent weeks when the press has ran metservice 'watches', and called them 'warnings', and the public have had enough of the 'false alarms'- 9 out of ten people in Christchurch no longer believe it when bad weather is forecast. Its back to the bad old days of the 80's.

Its not a good result for anyone.

Paul Gorman from the PRESS rang me up wanting a contact number for Aaron Wilkinson.
If anyone has it could they PM me.
I told him that a few were going out there to chase. He mentioned about someone from the PRESS going along with any of you guys.

Widespread storms seem to be happening, but only south of Timaru so far according to radar.

That cells looks promising. The ideal surface wind to get the cell cranking would be NE.
A NE means warm inflow that avoids the precip core.

Looked good up this way round Rangiora a few hours ago but then when the NE came in it all came apart and now no clouds to speak off even inland along the foothills.
Radar looks to show it going very fast out to sea as it moves north, and I cant see much getting much past timaru but hay we may get a night time thunder storm.

I can see that also from here. It's different anvil or incus but from the same system that dissipated earlier.
Long cloud layer to the south looks ominous and could produce something eventful later as the southerly moves north. :-k

Looks like back edge of any precipitation is just south of Oamaru .We have had a decent thunderstorm this afternoon with lots of lightning mostly in cloud . continuous thunder, heavy rain and hail about 1cm in size for about 30 minutes from 3-3.30pm

On radar, it appears not to be tracking as far out to sea as I had hoped...
