Never ending disappointment for christchurch.. I'm off to Brisbane to work for a month from boxing day, never fail to get a good storm there this time of year.
I'm no expert but I love severe weather!

Skywatcher wrote:Also went a tour :) First out towards the western storm then through Dunsandel to Alexanders Rd (I think) near Southbridge. Non-stop thunder at one point with IC lighting every few seconds but only saw one CG. Rain arrived with strong winds so headed to Leeston but eventually gave up trying to keep ahead of it.
Wow, that's so like a US Supercell, Nice!

We stayed out of the rain and hail. Going by the radar the biggest stuff was very coastal or even out to see. Il ask my brother if there was hail damage as he is in the farming insurance business.

Nice photos guys, like skywatches photo, a Southerly Buster there  .

Went for a drive between Dunedin and Moeraki( North Otago) yesterday afternoon, scattered showers and a few thunderstorms developed well ahead of the southerly change despite cool cloudy conditions. More thunderstorms came in with the front, some nice Cg lightning was observed off shore
A couple of photos, the southerly frontal change, Cb ahead of the front.

That supercell yesterday around 5:30pm was incredible! The northern corner passed directly over my house with constant thunder, lightning and hail for about half an hour. Filmed the whole thing even the rotation in the clouds which produced a very large funnel cloud spanning more than 100m for a time. Will post in YouTube once edited.

Great pancake structure !
(just as a comparison re lightning activity, you could use this video I shot of a super cell in kansas in 2007 as a bench mark :)

Good clip there, the southerly buster had some nice structure over North Otago as well.

A couple more photos taken Monday evening from aircraft, Cb over Eastern Waikto about 7.10pm, Cb over mid Canterbury about 8.10pm

The video starts at 7.20pm. Looking at your FB posts, that was an hour after one from Hinds and about 20 minutes before the one you sent near Leeston.

Sorry I was referring to matts post, should have quoted it. We were both on the same storm here. Took video of it that I will speed up into a timelapse.

I should mention there was a thunder/hail storm in north Dunedin ( pea size) mid afternoon when the front passed through there

Shots taken yesterday as the thunderstorm approached Oamaru . Appears to be a funnel from the base of the Cb in one frame .The cloud was rotating in front of me.Constant lightning flashes and continuous thunder . Storm dropped about 8mm of rain in 20 minutes with hail about 1cm in size

More of the same here I spose. Great photo's from others and video! There's been a big surge in interest in the weather in Canterbury with quite a few people out there going storm chasing now, interesting.......

Thanks Nev and Richard!

Agree NZstorm, this wasn't a supercell. Big good old gust front.

Are you sure it wasn't a supercell it looked very well structured and had good rotation in many areas, the large hail over the ocean and potential hooks on the radar could confirm this.
Does anyone have radar shots from yesterday? quite impressive with a circle at one stage near Banks Peninnsula with swirling bands either side.
Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms
