Had that here in Invers yesterday - the thunder was non-stop for 90 minutes over my part of the city but not much in the way of rainfall out of it.

There is a nice and really active Cb out in the Tasman sea at the moment. Has been firing away all day.

Severe Thunderstorm Outlook

Valid to: Midnight Monday 30 Dec 2013

Issued at: 1:54pm Monday 30 Dec 2013

Updated at 1.55pm to extend the moderate risk of thunderstorms for this afternoon up to Christchurch.

A weakening low to the west of Taranaki is forecast to move southeast and cross central New Zealand this afternoon, while an associated trough crosses the North Island. Showers are expected for much of the North Island this afternoon as the trough crosses and there is a broad low risk of isolated thunderstorms from Waikato, southern Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty southwards. However,this risk of thunderstorms is considered moderate from inland Bay of Plenty down through the central high country to Wairarapa, as indicated on the chart. Any thunderstorms that eventuate here are likely to produce localised heavy rain of 10 to 25mm/hr.

Meanwhile, a front is forecast to move onto the South Island West Coast this morning and cross much of the South Island this afternoon before weakening as it moves onto the North Island this evening. There is a moderate risk of embedded thunderstorms over Westland, Buller and northwest Nelson later this morning and early afternoon as the front crosses, with a low risk over Fiordland and extending eastwards into the remainder of Nelson, Marlborough into Canterbury High Country. Any thunderstorms that eventuate here are also likely to produce localised heavy rain of 10 to 25mm/hr, especially about the ranges.

There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms about eastern parts of Otago and Canterbury south of Christchurch this afternoon and evening. Any thunderstorms that occur here are likely to produce localised heavy rain of 10 to 25mm/hr and hail of 5 to 15mm in diameter.

Finally, cold upper level temperatures are forecast to spread onto southern New Zealand late this afternoon and evening, bringing a moderate risk of thunderstorms to Fiordland. Any thunderstorms here are likely to produce localised heavy rain up to 15mm/hr and small hail.

No thunderstorms or significant convection expected elsewhere.

Huh, that was odd. It normally tells you if there has been a new post while you were entering one. Didn't this time.

Posted at virtually the same time.

I'll delete my update, but all MS have done is alter the map and the 3rd paragraph to include S of Chch.

For future reference if you want to quote an external source you can just change the name inside the quotation marks.
Eg:

Code: Select all

[quote="Metservice"]hello this is quoted text[/quote]
The above will then look like this:
Metservice wrote:hello this is quoted text
And if you want to reference and quote you can nest the URL tag inside the quotation marks:

Code: Select all

[quote="[url=http://metservice.com]Metservice[/url]"]hello this is quoted text[/quote]
The above will output this:
Metservice wrote:hello this is quoted text
Its not required but I think it keeps the format nice and tidy :)

Anyway its mostly cloudy here atm, with soft convection with a temp around 21°C.

Nice Cb cell that formed on the sea breeze SW of Palmerston North and then got pushed up against the Tararuas.

A large area of moderate rain has come in here and stifled the convection, for the moment.

That was some strange system eh :-k a very quick crossing convergence from the NW and by quick I mean 20-30minutes, very fast development with brief heavy rain over the city driving home and observed one lightning flash to the east.
Wind had been NE most of the day and very humid, no wind now I don't think the southerly reached the city when I left at 3:30pm it still hadn't and as I say no wind at all here at home.
Could well be something lined up for abit later I am thinking _b

yes im not ruling it all out either today, i dont beleive that was the main SW wind change.. but could be wrong.
As i see it now im seeing CU towards mt peel way and showers developing in radar to. so i wouldnt say its over for the day just yet.
Tomorrow has cold upper air aloft over the south island and wensday also, just need some sort of trigger to set storms off, as i see no southerly flick tomorrow?? perhaps a convergance could do it.
