Re: General January weather
I see reports that honey will get more expensive
due to bees not getting out much due to the poor summer weather
(windy and cool)
in many parts of the north island and southland, etc

Re: General January weather
Thats interesting brian. There is talk around here that the cool weather is having a major effect on the development of maize crops. They are struggling majorly with the cold nights.

Re: General January weather
Brilliant day here. Mainly clear with a gentle NE sea breeze.
Here's a pic I took at Howick Beach around midday. Unfortunately the tide was out...

Re: General January weather
Yeah I know it will change, but I think it's encouraging to see some uncertainty in the models rather than seeing highs all the time

The pattern change is not so good Gisborne, would expect plenty of cloud there over the next week, they have had a good January with all the westerly flow.

Hoping those weakening subtropical lows push further east than currently modelled.

Re: General January weather
The dry zones were much more extensive in 1983, and the wettest ones far wetter than this time (record Jan high at Milford). Kelburn had only 15mm in Jan 1983, but over 130mm this month. It was also a much sunnier month for us then, though very cool.Michael wrote:Like 1983 though not as showey as then.

A pleasant 25.7C here at about 3:40pm, making it this month's warmest day, albeit the last one, lol.

Re: General January weather
Some of the sheltered Waiheke Island Bays must get very warm in sunny weather. I was at Little Oneroa on Wednesday/Thursday, very nice.

Re: General January weather
Yes, not much flat land on Waiheke, so there can be a lot of variant micro-climates, moreso between the north and south sides.
Slightly OT, but Jim twice mentioned tonight that ex-TC Dylan was producing good rainfalls and thunderstorms to the Cairns area. It missed Cairns completely and it doesn't look like they've had a drop in the last 2 days, Grrrrrrr!.

Re: General January weather
cool month that ended with 4 warm days to cheer us all up a bit.
average temp was 14.9°C - over 2°C less than 2013 and 1.2°C cooler than 2012.
140mm of rain - 50mm less than last year, but from 18 rain days, which was a lot (2012 = 12, 2013 = 14), and why it felt like a pretty miserable month.

Re: General January weather
Did you notice your records are showing a min of 3.9C on the 17th and 4.7C on the 25th? That will be lowering your avg min quite a bit...Manukau heads obs wrote:1.5C colder than last 10 years normal for here
