General January weather
Looks like a NW flow for much of the first week of January. Also looks like some really warm temperatures in some places. Here is an 850mb temperature chart for 1am Sunday 5th:

Re: General January weather
yea i saw this earlier today. If you do the rule of thumb from 850mb temps of plus 10 we could be hitting 30 here.

Re: General January weather
When was the last January we had such an unsettled start? all I can remember is highs becoming dominant around this time before the northern lows snuck in around the end of the month and into February.
Looks unsettled even out past the 9th January looks like a rather large low in the south Tasman, and a deep one for this Sunday too interesting weather making it challenging for campers.

Hope everyone had a happy New Year's Eve.
A relatively cool, tranquil start to 2014 here with 11.2C around dawn… up to about 18C now.

Re: General January weather
The disturbed westerly pattern modelled for the coming week will give Gisborne/Napier a hot spell will multiple days of 30C by the looks.

Re: General January weather
There is much better weather on the way for the holiday areas of eastern Northland , Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and Gisborne. The looser might be the Southern Lakes , spells of gusty winds and rain look likely there in the coming days.

Re: General January weather
Sparkling day today!
Looks like a couple of fronts attack the west of the North Island in the next 2-3 days although it looks like Taranaki region gets the brunt of the rain and possible thunder.

Re: General January weather
Potential for hot temperatures from tomorrow onwards - do you think Auckland will see enough sunshine to push past 27C at all?NZstorm wrote:Sparkling day today!

With NW flow low clouds tend to burn back over Auckland.David wrote:Potential for hot temperatures from tomorrow onwards - do you think Auckland will see enough sunshine to push past 27C at all?NZstorm wrote:Sparkling day today!

Re: General January weather
For more typical summer weather there needs to be a blocking high over the Chathams, but its still early Jan , another 2 weeks and we can only hope for a week trough to move down from the N/NE fingers crossed

Re: General January weather
Yes,its turning into a great season alright Jamie, though by the looks of the radar in and CHCH didn't get much this morning, suns out now and 13mm in total today.
By the look of the models Wednesday coming looks like more rain again for eastern areas.

Re: General January weather
Lots of cumulus cloud here now... must be the NW converging with the NNE breeze

It always amazes me how you can get such a strong NW over there but it struggles to make it this far inlandManukau heads obs wrote:NWer here gusting to 43 kts (80kmh)
