Nice footage!
Deja vu? I see MS updated today's T-Storm Outlook at 5:40pm to extend the moderate risk of T-Storms up to Banks Peninsula for late this arvo and evening...

I'm watching a distant tower of cloud billowing up to my south, seems to be rapidly getting higher.
Must be a long way off, judging by radar?

Showers coming in from the west I see.... The Waikato 120KM Radar images are not updating properly but are coming across fine on the 300KM scan.

He means the BOP one. It's only named bop because its technically in bop but it covers waikato very well.
That front has really died. It still hasn't made it here. It's almost stalled now.
Today's convection got going too far East for us to catch any rain. So no rai here today. The cells looked pretty good tho.

I thought he may of meant the BOP one but I just wanted to clarify things.

Another thing about the Waikato/BOP Radar:
I have noticed when ever there is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for the Hamilton area or around it, Metservice use the New Plymouth Radar (to ID it as Severe) even though its much further away than the BOP one.
Sure enough the NP Radar will be looking into the upper half of the storm, but that's nothing if you can get the echo's that are closest to the ground.
I honestly dont know where the logic is to use a Radar which around 100KM+ further out.....
Now that we are in January, max daytime time temps should be sustained for longer, so that should help with convection and the isolated heat induced thunderstorm chances
I am yet to see a proper Easterly seabreeze here, hopefully it occurs on a nice hot unstable day to come

Unfortunate eh, SE BOP is doing much better for storms than us Waikato folk are.....jamie wrote:That front has really died. It still hasn't made it here. It's almost stalled now.

Re: Storms- New Years day- 2014
the early morning decaying CB that moved south through this area yesterday delayed the heating here
that did not help
then also the NW wind arrived early and stronger than exepected, and so kept the convergence further east

It's not in the location it was originally planned for. It was originally planned for Puwhenua. Cost of getting mains on and difficulty negotiating for access resulted in it being relocated to it's new location in the Mamaku's.Nev wrote:About 2km from the Waikato/BoP border...
I think we scored rather well out of the move to be honest. It may be some 15m lower, but the 16 odd km more inland had a marked improvement in coverage over the Waikato.

Re: Storms- New Years day- 2014
Was over in Karamea, on the West Coast for new years, several storms passed through during the day. Some good lightning, internet was knocked out for several days and there was some heavy hail (smaller than pea size) during one cell in the afternoon.
