Re: Frosts 2014
It is concerning that Met Service got those temps so wrong. The -13C for Queenstown looked obviously wrong. There needs to some quality control processes with all forecasting.melja wrote:-1.6 in Cromwell, bit less than -12 forecasted

The very light breeze last night meant it didn't reach 0C until 1am - got down to -3.1C after sunrise.

Re: Frosts 2014
Not sure why the frosts were emphasized so much last nights news...is it because its the first cold spell? is it because its early (don't think so), or the scale of frosts??
Easily got down into double digit negatives in Clyde last few winters (bar the last), never remember those getting on the news/media attention, as well as the days that never got above 0 in Alexandra.
last winters good foot of snow in Hanmer seemed to be newsworthy while it was falling, but gosh the following two weeks were more problematic with heavy frost night after night with streets closed off and cars stuck left right and centre due to ice around the hilly streets...i remember...because i had to walk to work as many others did night or day (until the NW'r finally cleared off the large amounts of snow and ice in a night)
My conclusion...
...Its news until the country life and news novelty wears off for the city slickers
...or its news if it features city life and city slickers

Re: Frosts 2014
Should be another light frost here tomorrow morning. Looks like the breeze should completely die out tonight (unlike last night) so maybe 1C minimum. Already down to 8C.

It's more like a mid-winter night isn't it? I'm down to 4.9C already, at 9pm.jamie wrote:Lots of ice already on the cars here. Should be a cracker in the morn.

Frosts 2014
We are only like 20 odd days away from the longest night. This sort of set up then would deliver some slightly colder temps but not by much I wouldn't think. My record for coldest temp is within days of the longest night.David wrote: It's more like a mid-winter night isn't it? I'm down to 4.9C already, at 9pm.
I think a -4 is on the cards for here in the morn. Already at 0. This time last night it was still 4.

Re: Frosts 2014
have had a warming trend here overnight...4.6c here this morning...so no frost at least on the hill tops, unlike yesterday
so must be some air movement here
but waiuku is on -1.8C at 6:30
and grey lyn on 1.6C

Re: Frosts 2014
even though 4.7C at 1.8m reading, here, due to a bit of air movement from the east, a better frost down in the valley
