Re: General February Weather
hit 32.5°C here in Reefton today - NIWA station recorded 30.1°C. That isn't particularly newsworthy, but what surprised me was seeing that Westport only got to 19°C today. It's only 70km by road between us and Westport yet such a difference in temperature.
I guess it was quite similar on the east coast with Christchurch also getting to 20°C, whereas Culverden hit 34°C.

Re: General February Weather
Quite a dramatic cooling affect near the coast with onshore winds down there. Similar to what happened in Wellington yesterday.einzack wrote:hit 32.5°C here in Reefton today - NIWA station recorded 30.1°C. Re: General February Weather
Hot NW drifting in here now with dramatic mixing of the cool/warm air going on.
27C
Why does metservice at about this time of day put the expected high back up to what they were predicting first thing in the morning? its now back up to 29C at about 4pm they put it down to 20C which was about the high during the day.

Re: General February Weather
The NW finally arrived around 6pm, here, with a subsequent rise in temperature.
Would of been another lot warmer if the NW had arrived earlier in the day and with lessor mid-range clouding, once the low cloud from the east had cleared.

Re: General February Weather
I asked them why that was happening months ago. Quite often, it isn't even the same as the expected high was pre 4pm. Said they would look and see why it was happening but nothing has changed. The actual maximums for the day only stay up for one to two hours at the most.melja wrote:Hot NW drifting in here now with dramatic mixing of the cool/warm air going on.

Re: General February Weather
It's called "Nowcasting", a system that weather forecasters use when the weather is doing what it is at the moment as opposed to what was actually forecasted. It is mainly designed to 'cover their arses' in a situation when the forecasted scenario does not 'come to play', despite initial forecasts being near to accurate, and also because of unseen developments in the atmosphere/ weather patterns etc.melja wrote: Why does metservice at about this time of day put the expected high back up to what they were predicting first thing in the morning? its now back up to 29C at about 4pm they put it down to 20C which was about the high during the day.

Re: General February Weather
great answer
Thanks for that Flutterbye, I think the 29C was the forecast high they had up there yesterday and this would have been updated around 4-5am today I would think.
I think this goes to show that they use computers more often than they tell us to make there forecasts even though they say the 1-5 day ones are produced by real people.

Yes, not sure what Cooptown's actual max was, but yesterday's 3pm obs had it on 31C.Skywatcher wrote:The Banks Peninsula reading is actually from Cooptown between Little River and Hilltop - Port Hills is Lyttelton. Yes, 31C appears to have been the high for Culverden, whereas TV3 said 34C for Hurunui, which I assume is the village about 20 km SW of Culverden, rather than the entire district.Richard wrote:einzack wrote: whereas Culverden hit 34°C.

P.S. Re MS's web forecasts, metpetey posted the following about a year ago, which kinda contradicts MS's blurb about temps for the first 4 or 5 days of their daily forecasts being produced manually…
metpetey wrote:I believe the manual editing of all computer generated max/min temps ceased more than two years ago to allow meteorologists more time to concentrate on other tasksTornado Tim wrote: The max, mins and forecast for the first 3 days are actually done by meteorologists, the rest are computer generated.

Re: General February Weather
Looks cold enough for snow to about 800m in the south tomorrow and some squally thunder along the south coast. That polar trough looks 2 months too early!
I wouldn't rule out a few coastal lightning strikes for Canterbury either.

Re: General February Weather
And i cant see that the Hurunui village would have had 34 either, generally that would be the case during periods of high pressure and light winds as the village is located under a line of north facing hills and is often much warmer than Culverden, but yesterdays NW wind means the temps would have been far more consistentNev wrote:[

Re: General February Weather
What an annoyance the typical clag was for Canterbury yesterday stopping us from getting the hottest day of summer, however today might be the day as its already 33.2C as of 11am rising very fast and the hottest temperature I have recorded for late morning ever.
A nice breezy NW wind and clear skies, ouch I can see us nearing 40C in some areas today now.

Re: General February Weather
Yes it will be interesting. 33 degrees here also currently and the wind has pretty much died completely away now. Mid 35/36 in some areas a real possibility today. No cloud at all to speak off.Storm Struck wrote:What an annoyance the typical clag was for Canterbury yesterday stopping us from getting the hottest day of summer, however today might be the day as its already 33.2C as of 11am rising very fast and the hottest temperature I have recorded for late morning ever.

Although having said that it is a slight SSW here now and the temp has dropped back to 31.

Re: General February Weather
It went SW briefly here but is now more westerly, dropped to 31.4C though.
Maybe some thunder/hail along the coast tomorrow, more likely further south of the city.

I see NIWA's Hanmer Forest site got to 34.3C yesterday.
Not quite as high as Clyde's 35.7C on Thursday though.
