Big tides

Unread post by Manukau heads obs »

No sand left on beaches here on the Manukau, tide right up to the top of the beaches :)

Saw this on stuff:

Code: Select all

A beautiful day in Auckland has meant the effects of the king tide were minimised as the high pressure system over the city pushed down on the sea and kept the tides a little lower. A lack of wind also meant the flooding was reduced.

"Had we had any significant wind and lower pressure we would have had some issues," said Richard Wood, manager planning and intelligence for Civil Defence in Auckland.
Huh?

the barometer is 1005
i.e lower than normal

i.e we are not under a high pressure...its only nice weather because of the fohn SE wind
(and that SE wind and relatively large swell on the east coast of the north island will be helping to raise the tide on the Auckland side even more than expected. How much intelligence is going on here?

Yep, I'm planning on heading down to Eastern Beach tomorrow morning to check it out.
Eastern Beach has been affected badly by king tides and storm surges in recent years - check out the difference from 6 years ago! http://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-n ... on-problem

A NE wind can be a problem for the northwestern motorway with king tides. I assume the road works that are going on there currently will resolve that issue.

I noticed the cycle way was flooded this morning but no water on the motorway.

Port Waikato is suffering from alot of beach erosion too
but some of that might because the waikato river is enterng the tasman further and further north and so its missing out on sediment

do those motorists realise its salt water and not fresh water
(i.e might be an idea to rinse the underside of the car afterwards)

If they didn't, I'm betting they'll be selling before long and I pity the purchaser :(

Does my head in that seeing people driving down the beach in their flash new range rover  almost like its invincible.
I know 4wd's are good for launching boats but that's only a little bit of salt water generally on the back of the vehicle, which with anyone with common sense would rinse the vehicle when the boat is being done as well.

Anyway the Heathcote river was noticeably higher the past 3-4 days, and I must say the clean up job that's going on around it is fantastic =D> not so much the quality of the water though and some parts of the reconstruction in the banks are far too low.
