That was a ripper of a storm. The updraft bit came overhead here in Hornby, I got a hail ranging from 10c to 50c piece size. The thunder was constasnt with lighting stikes and IC that looked great with one strike a close exploder.
What a beaut or a storm.

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Yes big hail indeed! Continuous thunder and lightning occurred. Still randomly going off at the moment. Perhaps a 2nd little wave in an hour or so. Still an easterly here!

Looks to be redeveloping inland to the west as it goes so might get some action here to.

Few huge rumbles followed by a good downpour. Lightening still coming from the west and northwest

Plenty of lightning observed from here, had 20 minutes or so of heavy-ish rain with some partly melted hail. Managed to get one strike on video, will post later

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Large tornado hit south side of Amberly. Seen one house with it roof torn off and spread around. Witneased earlier tornado around Southbridge way (at a guess) followed the storm north then watched the Amberly tornado. Video to come later tonight

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Small tornado just east of Amberley township. I watched it develop for a while prior. Looked to be at its most active over the Leithfield area. Power currently out. Hail 20-25mm here near storm path. Didn't left long.

Saw a funnel briefly touch the ground just to the north of Burnham during the first storm, the clouds had a rotational look about them

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Most of the IC lightning was obscured in the first storm which mostly passed to the east but I saw at least half a dozen CGs, some were very bright and strobing. I only managed to get one on camera - pointing in the wrong direction or wiping the lens for the better ones
The second, smaller storm wasn't as active but was almost overhead with clearer ICs.

Was at Halswell New World when it hit - some hail pea sized. Heavy rain showers again travelling to BP, with temps down to 7C at Hilltop.

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Power back on now. Watched the tornado cloud develop well south of Amberley from the beach, I would guess it was Waikuku or inland from there. Cloud initially looked like a large dark grey sausage, but I was suspicious of, and when it got closer could see the rotation. It only took on the traditional funnel cloud shape when over the Leithfield area, and lost its structure after2-3 minutes. As it passed closest to me here (about 2-3km away) I could see light debris like plastic wrap etc circulating under the remains of the cloud. Went for a drive up Beach road and it looks to have passed over just north of Double Corner road, the roads there are green with leaves, and the hail in that small area (100-150m across) was noticeably thicker.
Hail stones were 15-20mm here, and 20-25mm in the target zone. My mothers house is barely 200m from the line the tornado took, and she thought her windows were going to blow in, but I think that was more from the noise of the horizontal hail hitting them, than the outright windspeed. Her garden is not too badly shredded, I would estimate the wind speeds as 30-40 knots if it was damage from a conventional wind storm. Shame I didnt get any photos...
