Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
Head up... we (the Council) are opening welfare centres due to the flooding threat, see mainstream media for full details
The Council Civil Defence team has set-up a Welfare Centre that will be open from 8.30pm at Mairehau High School, 440 Hills Rd, Mairehau 8052. Residents will be provided with shelter and tea and coffee. Residents are advised to bring their own bedding.
Be aware a lot of roads are already closed by flooding and worse may still be to come.
Take care Christchurch, and surrounds, its appearing to be a rough night for many homes

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
I'm in Waltham / St Martins. Been raining all day but much heavier in the last hour or so.
WOW!
Just went for a quick drive as my elderly mother lives on riverlaw tce. From st martins rd it's up to houses front doorsteps and worse the lower down fifield and riverlaw you go. So the river is at least .5m to 1m over the bank. Basically from front of houses to front of houses right across. I've never seen it this high.
Drove around beckenham and woolston and it's bad everywhere. A lot of debris and branches down. The heathcote looks to have breached in most places. Driving is horrible, so many hidden pot holes and large streams across the rd.
Can only imagine how bad it is in aranui/bexley/new Brighton etc

Don't think I'm qualified to predict how long it will last, just hope we get enough lulls before 8:30am high tideCWUweather wrote:Razor.... what do you think? Rain until lunch time tomorrow?Razor wrote:Was just going to say the wind had eased, then in came the biggest gust today. Wow.

Wind and rain here today.
Noticed some pine needles blowing across like what Michael has in days of gale SW blowing and across his place in Auckland.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
This event has very been very much confined to the CHCH region, only had 15mm in total but still plenty of wind though, looks like another blob of rain coming in from the SE at the moment ,hope we get a bit more rain yet,15 is not enough to break the dry,
