Heavy rain and severe gales in town, its as extreme as I've seen here, certainly since that Lyttelton day when the marina blew to bits.
And expected to intensify yet? Yikes Broken bits of trees everywhere, its like a giant mulcher is marching through town
Airport closed, roof damage, etc, this is full on

Wind's just begun getting rackety again here after a comparative lull for a couple of hours.
Sounds much worse in Chch though - stay safe up there.

Travelled between Akaroa harbour area and Chch late this morning - a few trees down, but no flooding as yet, despite the driving rain.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
Hey folks things are getting rather grim in ChCh with flooding already beoming extensive on top of the still very blustery winds. The Avon is already close to breaching its banks at the gloucester st bridge in the CBD
If you are here take care and keep any travel tonight to that which is only essential. By morning its going to bring a deal of carnage I fear.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
When I got home my Stevenson's Screen was upside down. Must of been a strong SW gust to do this this.
It is getting quite depleted now as, several times it has been knocked off it's post.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
Amazing how calm it has been in Wellington all day. I'm currently up the top of Mt Vic and looking to the south and the is all but no wind. Very light southerly. Yet a few km out to sea in Cook Strait, it is rough as guts with massive white caps. BIG swell on the south coast too. The Bluebridge Ferry "Santa Regina" was having a wild ride cutting across the swells to get into the harbour entrance. Looks like a visible wind line to the south, so don't think the gales are too far away.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
It seems to be a very blustery situation out there where there is damage in isolated pockets of the city/ north Canterbury, quite a few limbs down from weaker trees like willows etc.
The wind has been very strong so far today but as I say its not constant just in occasional waves/ bursts, the wind generally is sitting around 40-50kmh but sometimes gusting around 80kmh.
A lot of surface flooding around the city this afternoon, the brunt of this system comes overnight with heavier rain and possibly higher wind gusts which may see us beat the 2000 southerly wind storm

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
Rain getting heavy again in Rangiora with red showing up on the radar in this area.
I don't think the wind will get any stronger as the peak was this morning and has now moved north.

29mm thus far today and 43mm for this system to date. Avon river had burst its bank on one side by Durham St when driving home from work. Next few hours will be interesting if we get torrential falls developing!

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
This low seems to be feeding in rain from the off the seas off the Canterbury Bight.
Cold winds, warm seas, low pressure, seems to be a good ingredient for moisture to give another good rainfall total.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
Only 16.8mm recorded so far today with all of the earlier showers missing here to the east or west. The winds eased slightly after the main rain arrived at about 1pm with fewer gusts over 50km/h. First time this year I've had to use the heat pump.

Re: Southerly gales and rain, March 3rd to 6th
Brief break now with light to moderate rain. You can see on the radar the next heavy band intensifying out to sea and heading slowly towards the city from the SE on the radar loop.
