General April Weather
Outside temp jumping quickly at the moment with the increasing NW wind. Hopefully we catch a good squally thunderstorm during the night.

Re: General April Weather
Very little instability in that overnight front.
Looks a good day for cold air cb's over western North Island. Sea surface temps are still quite warm 18-20C between New Plymouth and Auckland.

Re: General April Weather
The gfs had modelled it to be quite weak for thunder. The kinematics looked ok but instability was almost zilch.

3.7C in Queenstown with rain, Winter has arrived in the south. The overnight snow across the ski fields might be a couple of weeks too early to be of use.

How are the chances looking early tomorrow morning? Metservice have us on a moderate risk again.NZstorm wrote:The gfs had modelled it to be quite weak for thunder. The kinematics looked ok but instability was almost zilch.

From late afternoon till tomorrow morning the risk of isolated thunder for Auckland. A trough early in the morning has some energy with it but overall this is not a significant thunder set up. Raglan would be a good spot for some overnight rumbles.

Yes the upper air is very cold, thunder possible for areas near our west coast.

Re: General April Weather
Although records aren't all that complete for the Pukaki/Twizel area, -7.0C in 1973 is the lowest April temp recorded there since records began in 1972.melja wrote:I see M/S going for -7C in the Mackenzie Basin tonight, bit extreme

Re: General April Weather
With all the high risk warnings of severe thunderstorms in taranaki, and high gusts, no thunder or lightning observed- only a few on radar for that 48 hour period but most were located offshore all around NZ, especially BOP

Re: General April Weather
Yeah, that happens quite often.
The potential is there but nothing much happens.
Don't forget it's a "Risk" so it means that there is a possibility that, it won't happen.

Re: General April Weather
No doubt about that, but its more of how severe warnings were out where the bulk of the strikes (estimating a good 80%) were in squalls off shoreNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Yeah, that happens quite often.

are winter TS harder to pinpoint in compared to summer convergence in NZ?
