Niwa Drought SPI index chart

Unread post by Richard »

Not very impressed with Niwa latest data,it certainly doesn't correctly indicate how dry it is inland north of Waipara through to Waiau which they have as normal (green),went to Oxford yesterday also shown as a green area and the difference in the country side was quite noticeable.Even along the coast up to Kaikoura there's much more rain than the Amuri area as had this year so far

Note that it's comparison to normal
I would expect eastern SI areas to be dry this time of year

To use the term 'normal' would mean its dry most years which is not the case, its been a few years now since its still been this dry this late ,ive only recorded 45mm so far this year which is a lot less than other areas of Nth Canterbury yet the all of North Canterbury is classed as green.
