That cloud out to the southwest did produce a weak storm. Another dry day for much of Auckland

Plenty of thundery rain over the central NI this afternoon/evening

That doesn't surprise me one bit. Looked a doozy from my vantage.

A shower risk like today but that's about it. Looks like Bay of Plenty get the rain.

A weather station at Waiuku got 37mm today. Max rain rate was 95mm/h.

Saw a couple of lightning flashes to the E/NE of Palmy within the last 20mins and have just now heard a loud clap of thunder. Also, we are finally getting some rainfall, although only light at this stage. It looks like the lightning is coming from a cell just passing over the northern end of the Tararuas and heading in a westerly direction (weird for the Manawatu).

Large rain area approaching BOP from the N/E cant rule out some flood probs or even a Tornado tonight . Some lightning out to sea now.

Nice heavy shower here st the moment
A precursor of what's coming ( I.e increasingly unstable broad air mass)

00z GFS has completely backed off the instability for coastal BOP overnight tonight.

Looks like Metservice has taken it with a bit of salt as they have a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for coastal BOP....
Chris is doing the night shift tonight..... Might be an interesting night for him.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch:
Metservice wrote: Issued by MetService at 10:02 pm Thursday 10 April 2014
Valid until Midday Friday 11 April 2014
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Bay of Plenty
Rotorua
Gisborne

This is an alert for potential downpours in a rainband moving onto the northeast of the North Island overnight Thursday and during Friday morning.

An active frontal band is forecast to spread heavy rain into Bay of Plenty and Gisborne before dawn on Friday (see latest Severe Weather Warning and Watch). In addition to widespread rain, there is a risk of thunderstorms embedded in the rainband producing localised downpours with rainfall rates reaching 25-40mm/hr.

Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe weather in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and be alert for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

Issued by: Chris Noble

This watch will be updated by: 06:00 am Friday 11 April 2014

Looking fine in Auckland but with high cloud 18C to start the day.

GFS/ukmet suggest isolated thunder in the west of Waikato later today with the last of the upper trough crossing.

Got woken by what sounded like occasional large hail about 12.45am, but didn't bother getting up for a look. I was knackered last night. Kind of regret it this morning. Otherwise an unremarkable night.

Fingers crossed my day goes ok up the Coromandel today as I have a fair amount of outside work. Not looking great out there right now with what appears to be a big belt of rain on a collision course on radar.

Am hoping the front will move enough east to bring rain here
But might just slide to our south
Unless it can wrap a bit and spiral north a bit

7mm here earlier this morn (although another Waiheke PWS recorded 11mm).

A little baffled by this statement by Transpower…
Lightning cuts Bay's power - NZ Herald
7:05 AM Friday Apr 11, 2014

Simultaneous lightning strikes sent the East Coast into the dark ages as power and communications were severed to Hawke's Bay and Gisborne for 75 minutes yesterday.

Transpower corporate communications manager Rebecca Wilson said a double lightning strike knocked out two Transpower circuits about 40km east of Taupo. …

She said the lightning storm was a flash out of the blue and was not forecast earlier in the day.

"We do have regular lightning strikes on our network and we monitor the weather carefully but that's mother nature for you." …
Huh? :-k

We have had much more rain here at work (near matangi) than what i have had at home. Cant confirm that though since tims website hasnt updated. But we have had decent rain all day while i have had just 6.4mm which includes the heavy shower at 4am. I must be just slightly too far north.
