Very sorry to hear about damage in Westland: any recent news, and what is the outlook?einzack wrote:Wind is developing into quite a story here on the West Coast.
Westport still cut-off and power out in large areas and won't be connected until the morning at the earliest.
Several roads in and around Greymouth also closed, houses damaged etc.
Cobden (a suburb of Greymouth hit badly in 2008) is cut-off. Can't enter or leave as a house (or a garage I'm not sure) is thought to be about to collapse on the road.
while here in Reefton there is barely a breath of wind.
highest gust of 18.7 km/hr recorded earlier today.
Seen numbers quoted for of the ~1000 weather related emergency calls received up til 4pm 230 have been from the West Coast, while 290 from Auckland. When you consider the population of the West Coast compared to Auckland, that tells you that this is affecting a very large area and a lot of people on the coast.

Be happy if the system remained as the status quo now as its a sunny warm and quite calm day now but feel for those in nelson, westport and Canterbury as had lots of rain.

I'm stuck in traffic on sh1 at tirau. Looks really untestable everywhere.
Must be some major flash flooding in BOP with that very slow moving torrential rain

Edge of the CB crossing my place at Glenfield. Suddenly went rather dark. Had some signal issues with Sky, too.

Turned out to be a lovely day here, plenty of sunshine, min 19C and max 24C. Too humid though!
The lawn is growing like crazy after that 50mm of rain we got yesterday.

The roads out of Auckland today were very congested so no chance of a chase south or north. The distant thunderstorm tops over southwest Waikato looked great.
Watched a nice Cb line develop over West Auckland this afternoon, no thunder heard by me but I see there have been storms along that line. photo

Just when I thought it was over, heavy lashing drizzle is back again! I cant believe the comparison of this YTD rainfall with last years. At this stage last year 115mm and this year YTD is over 380mm!

I've had 63mm for the event so far - only 276mm YTD here. I see on TV3 that the "Port Hills" recorded a gust of 133km/h today. Power was out for an hour here from 4am due to a tree on the lines.

Quite a downpour! Not too far off the all-time national 10-minute rainfall record of 34mm recorded in Tauranga, almost to the day, on April 17, 1948.Yesterday David wrote:Just noticed that this station recorded 29mm in the 10 minutes from 8.10am to 8.20am. 112mm over the last 2 days for both Tauranga Aero and Whakatane Aero, including that 29.6mm in Tauranga for the hour to 8am yesterday.

Reports of flooding in whakatane...and more
Rain heading their way
Interstingly with the heavy shower line we got
Yesterday
Was due to wind convergence
There was a fresh NNE blowing
Down the harbour
But over the land here the wind was much lighter
