130mm in 4 hours at Whakatane late yesterday. Yes, more shower lines there today!
Looks like the Waitomo coast will get convergence/thunderstorms next few hours.
The set up for thunder is falling apart today so only a low risk for Auckland I think.

Surface winds are backing into NW this morning which won't be good for convergence.Manukau heads obs wrote:Some heavy showers to move im from the NW though this morning

Your photo is oversized Brian. I can see spill's image but yours is too large when you click on it.
Some heating over Waikato could give those cb's a kick into thunderstorms.

Re Whakatane. Friend their said there was continuous Thunder heard through the night, but was at its peak from 6-10pm last night. Was still going at 6am this morning!!
Anyone have access to strike count data/map for the area overnight? She is keen to know how many there were, as was some of the best she has ever seen/heard in over 40 years there.

Drove as far as Matata yesterday, no thuder or hail but some realy intense rain, driving impossible when you cant see the side of the road.Wish I had gone on to whakatane now. The weather was never going to be photogenic with all the low cloud around, looks like Opotiki may be taking a hit this morning ? More action BOP today though I think it will be pushed through quickly with just a brief heavy shower for most.

I have been very busy with faults on the Vector Electricity Network in West Auckland. Most outages were all tree related. 18 April one massive CG strike near Shirley rd Parau, about 1800 hrs, about less then 1 km away from our work site. Great lightning display that evening of the 17th. in the east ( Hauraki gulf ) Interesting weather, still very warm.

There was some torrential rain at Taupo this afternoon. The storm had some good structure to it too.

I wonder if that played a part in the Rescue Helicopters hard landing after it clipped trees on approach to the hospital?jamie wrote:There was some torrential rain at Taupo this afternoon. The storm had some good structure to it too.

Off topic, Driving in the rain, safety tip/ramble.
That's why I use Rain-X on my windscreen. On the Matata straights the other day I passed a big string of cars behind a truck. Could see easily with no wipers on. The driver of the plain clothed police car stuck behind the truck didn't like this and pulled me over further up the road (when he got past the truck crawling up the Otamarakau hill). Seems he'd never heard of Rain-X and he left with the remainder of my bottle to try. He was going to do me for dangerous driving, overtaking like that without wipers going. I'm sure my evidence (Full HD car camera & GPS) would have shown in that case I didn't exceed 100 km/hr and had plenty of visibility, but I never even bothered to pull the card.treetop wrote:driving impossible when you cant see the side of the road.
If you guys are going out in poor weather, please ensure you have decent washer fluid, it's tank full, good wiper blades and Rain-X or equivalent on your windscreen, it could save your or someone elses life. Remember to watch for rain wash where you might aquaplane and slow down before it. After driving through wash, always check your brakes! Don't chase at all with poor tyre tread!
Note, I've given up on the Rain-X additive for the washer bottle, only using normal household dishwashing detergent solution now. It (Rain-X) dries leaving horrible streaks in the view out your windscreen. It's much better to regularly (Fortnightly here, or just before going on a chase) refresh the Rain-X coating on your windscreen.

Re: Ex-TC Ita affecting NZ - April 17-19 (Thu-Sat)
Yeah I heard about the -ve effects of Rain X. Thanks for the reminder of detergent, I am abit slack in that department. The high rain intensity was abit hit and miss the other day[Tepuke/ Matata] ie 50mm/hr then 100m and 200mm/hr another 100m down the road no rain at all. Be good to have an electronic shortduration rain recorder whist on the road [when stopped]. I am sure a few rain records could be broken.

Had thought of going to the West Coast before this event but by the time I add up all the costs I couldnt justify it unfortunately.

I spent a bit of time over Easter going for runs in the Port Hills. Great weather Sat Sun Mon, but evidence of tremendous winds in areas around Victoria Park/ East Side Bush with tracks impassible and many many fallen trees

Coast was good most of the weekend, only crap weather was Thursday and had to look hard to see or find damage and it was just isolated pockets not widespread.

Reminds me of the time when I was still an active road cyclist up in Auckland and was finishing a big training ride with a blat down my favourite hill. There's a side road joins it about halfway down, and I saw a big Falcon or whatever pulling up there. The driver didn't give it much of a look and was about to pull out into my path, but I squeaked by with a huge "OI!" as I went past. I heard the screech of brakes, but was a bit distracted by the thought that the driver was in a cop uniform. Sure enough, on come the bells and whistles and he pulls me over at the intersection at the bottom of the hill. He was still redfaced and breathing hard from his recent near career-death experience of T-Boning an innocent cyclist with the right-of-way, but the cop gave me some stick anyhow to cover up his shock and embarrassment. He was gonna do me for exceeding the local speed limit by 53 km/h! Anyway, he eventually got over it and told me he was a mountainbiker, so we yakked about Great Rides We Have Done and stuff for five minutes, then he drove away with a wave.
OT sorry, but your story gave me a real chuckle.
Now, on with the weather, which still totally sucks b*lls.
