Good show, but not photogenic. Watching it coming in from the North at Ferguson Park.

Ex-TC Ita affecting NZ - April 17-19 (Thu-Sat)

I remember this exact thing happened 21st April last year. I was sitting in bed watching early morning lightning over Tauranga. We then had torrential rain thunder and funnel cloud in the afternoon.

Tauranga must be getting continuos rolling thunder. This lightning is a strobe fest as Willo put it. I'm not even getting to 5 secs between each flash.

Close to it. Am very frustrated. Over 10k detections by my Blitzortung Loops, have seen quite a few CG's and nothing detected by the system :(

I would have thought Tim's and another upper nz one would have detected that lightning. So why is the system not working?

There were a lot of weak intercloud flashes, maybe only the CG and long anvil crawlers showing up as I have noticed in the past. Hope fully more to come upstream later. Being west of Tauranga , TStorm activity usually splits ,one moving through Waikato and the other East of a line from Mayor Is to Tauranga, will need to chase today cause nothing happening here !Tepuke/Whakatanae {coast} my pick for a chase tgsnoopy ? Happy Easter everyone

I got up at 1.30am and could see distant flashes every 5 seconds. Shame that line didn't come in closer to Auckland!

What a day here yesterday! With Waiheke hosting the Easter International Jazz Fest, probably our busiest weekend of the year, about half the island was without power for more than 9 hours from about 11am. Sealink vehicle ferries also cancelled sailings yesterday morning, which meant no fresh produce at the supermarket or stores to top-up already depleted stocks due to the impending holiday weekend. The power outages also meant no petrol at the pumps. And today, most stores are closed. We're used to outages here, but I think this could put the future of our historically finically shaky Jazz Fest in serious jeopardy. :(

Ended up with 37.5mm from late Wednesday to early Thursday.

I see Kaikoura recorded 109mm yesterday, plus at least 38mm to 6am this morn. Whitianga Aero also recorded 100mm yesterday. And for the 24 hours to 9am yesterday, Kerikeri Aero recorded 109mm.

Here are some of MS's top gusts yesterday…

Will keep an eye on western Waikato this afternoon for possible storms chase. Just need that boundary to our west to come on shore a bit! Or maybe some convergence will occur anyway.

Looks like the overnight thunder was as far south as Taupo. Upper level divergence from the jet stream exit region was a major player in the overnight thunderstorm development.

Need to keep an eye out for convergence today.

North Auckland could be worth a lightning chase late tonight if the gfs is correct.

Sunday PM is looking great at this stage with a potent upper level system crossing from the west.

45mm so far for Dunedin. Looks like another 20mm on its way over the next 12-16 hours.

Leith Stream is at about 45 cumecs and rising. Webcam at the bottom of this link shows it starting to ease out of its banks next to the Gregs factory not far from the Leith mouth into the Otago Harbour.
