Further heavy rain for Canterbury - April 28/29
Looks like next week sees a return to the wet, a low to the east if the SI could give Canterbury another shot of un-needed liquid. Not what you folks in christchurch want to hear I'm sure. Also snow to around 1000m do could be good for base building at the ski fields

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
haven't even got close to a frost yet, ground temps warm, far to warm for a snow base to last

I dare say we will have a decent frost on Sunday morning for inland Canterbury Richard, especially for your location...

Yes, another period of wet weather for the east coast of the SI.
Possibly, another 60mm for here from tomorrow until when the low moves off.

Just on the edge of the rain here... Caught some mammatus and fallstreaks on the webcam earlier this morning.

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
A lot of mammatus cloud about here as well, also patches of blue sky, some tall cb's developing to the south so i wouldn't be surprised if there was a clap of thunder down CHCH way at some stage.
The centre of the low now looks to be just off BP

Absolutely pissing down here inland of mayfield and only 6 degrees, instant hand numbing when driving the bike

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
Looks to be something nasty embedded on the rain radar right now to the south of Ashburton- warnings indicate embedded thunderstorms are expected?

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
Yes the possibility of a clap of thunder or two embedded in this rain today, but it sure is wrapping into mid to south Canterbury.
Just moderate falls of rain here so far in the last hour or so, eased back to just lightly spitting fresh southerly and 9.8C.

Thanks for that, Razor, that nasty bit sneaked up on me: have unplugged internet devices. It's awfully dark, need lights on indoors! Raining hard and 7.8deg.

Heavier rain has arrived here, about 8-14mm/h and 8.5C with a light NW breeze.

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
After some very strong gusts from the south, and a brief power interruption, the cloud has suddenly lifted and I can see a patch of dull blue sky to my south-east. Extraordinary piece of weather altogether.

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
Wind looks like its a big issue down south Canterbury too with it gusting 90kph in timaru and reports of power outages- no mention of winds in the M/S warnings

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
The low centre has shifted back onto the plains by the looks over Mid Canterbury, it was just off Banks Peninnsula late morning but you can see the intense band over the city northwards then more stronger wrapping into south Canterbury.
I suspect as the low shifts back and pulls to the east again the back bone will get going again.
The rain sure has been heavy the past hour or so but back to moderate falls, no wind to speak of and 8.7C.

Re: Further heavy rain for Canterbury
Yeah, it sort of eased off from about 4pm, and there was even some blue patches with the sun trying to shine through. Calm as if in the eye of the storm. Was NE but now a hint of a SE or Southerly is in the air.
