Re: General May Weather
The Arthurs Pass road is closed owing to the slip near Jacksons
As this is the case, the road is only a local col-de-sac or whatever they call it, to the village, until the slip is cleared, probably.

to be pedantic, the slip is at Kellys Creek, Otira. Not Jacksons.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:The Arthurs Pass road is closed owing to the slip near Jacksons

Re: General May Weather
As we round off May we have one last system to make landfall later tomorrow in the South Island, I am not quite sure what the MS are looking at with sleety showers for Christchurch on Thursday .
The snow level would need to be atleast 200m for sleet and its well up to around 500-600m.
The start of official winter might be a lot calmer by the looks.

Thought she was a bit on the chilly side this morning here.. it wasn't just the 'barber' .. there was also a nice capping of snow on top of Mt. Davy.. didn't think it got that cold but just goes to show. Been here since Feb. 2011 & haven't seen such an early dump.

Re: General May Weather
Really low humidity here this afternoon. Lowest was 29%, resulting in a dewpoint of -4.4C! That's the lowest dewpoint my station has ever recorded.
Edit - the final record low dewpoint was -5.7C. The humidity low was 27% (equal to the record).
Must have a been dry air mixing down from above?

Re: General May Weather
What's going on?
A strong and mild NW is blowing here, 17C, but it is cold in Ch ch with a light SE.
The airport reports a 7C temperature and 9C in Hillmorten? I see that it's 13C in Templeton with a light wind?

Same- that inversion layer can be fascinating when running up the Port Hills this time of year as you cruise back to the bottom.Captain Salty wrote:Running on the hills tonight I was getting light gusts of warm and cold air.

Re: General May Weather
Interesting.
I've heard that the NW does 'bounce' as it flows over the Canterbury Plains
Some areas can be windy but other areas , not.
Interesting, also today, I was at work in Halswell, this morning as there was a very much of a sea sort of smell in the air, like what you get around New Brighton/Sumner or the times in Kaikoura.
Anyway, the temperature outside is back up to 17C. again

Re: General May Weather
Interesting!
8.7C at the airport and 17.1C here at West Melton
Strong gusty NW and hardly any wind there?
We're not that far away from the "Harewood Aerodrome"

Calm in Cracroft. no sign of NW wind here, that will explain it, must be 'bouncing' over usNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Interesting!

Re: General May Weather
I see, (not the wrongthread ), but it is warming up a bit at the airport with a NE so, the NW shift is starting to move slightly northward, with the advancement of the front.
I did notice that the occluded front in the Tasman sea is delivering a lot of lightning according to the Blitzortung lighting recording indicators.
Down to 16.6C now.

Put the fire on then! Seriously though, we have the moderate NW here now. Nothing to write home about other than its about 20 degrees warmer than yesterday at dawnNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:I see, (not the wrongthread ), but it is warming up a bit at the airport with a NE so, the NW shift is starting to move slightly northward, with the advancement of the front.

Re: General May Weather
I first noticed the gusty NWer around about 7pm here in Kaiapoi on the east coast, house creaked with the first gust and whistled through the chimney.
So certainly some pockets out east that didn't get the wind until well later on.

Yes, crazy weather. Large parts of the South Island with warmer temps last night than yesterday or today's daytime temps, and record or near record low May temps for Akld yesterday morning.

Re: General May Weather
Much of NZ looks to have had a warmer than usual May apart from northern NZ.
I have been in Wanaka last couple of days, 7-15C yesterday felt warm after previous days weather. It looks like the frosty weather returns to Central Otago from tonight with a cold High moving in.

Interesting-looking line of cloud appearing to my south, seems to be advancing this way.
Currently sunny, 17.6 degrees, little wind.

Haven't seen such an impressive, roiling roll-cloud for a long time.
Southerly has just arrived with some very strong gusts.

The gust front was a bit messy when it arrived here about 10 minutes ago - still rolling rapidly though.
