Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
I was surprised to see nobody had made a topic on this event yet so here it is.
As we all know this is mainly a southern South Island event in terms of icy precipitation but it looks like the whole country can't escape a plunge in temps. Queenstown -9C on Monday morning will be a harsh reminder winter is around the corner. I was driving home from ashburton around 10:30pm and there was a hint of sleet in a heavy shower that passed through. Not much eventuated from the 'strong SW change with brief gales' which metservice predicted though. Currently 4.2C, clearest sky i have seen in a while

Re: Cold outbreak 24th - 26th May
Probably hasn't been made a topic yet because there's only a few members in the areas to be affected by this first major winter outbreak, certainly looking like a nasty system coming up from the south going by this morning satellite images

Re: Cold outbreak 24th - 26th May
Ski fields have a good covering now on the webcams down south! Just noticed, Metservice now going to an overnight low of -13 in Queenstown on Monday night!! A bit extreme?

-13 is for Monday night. Agreed, seems a tad on the extreme side

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
I think -13C would be an all-time record for Queenstown, let alone a May record.
Btw, I've extended the date range for this thread, as the lowest temps look to be on Tuesday morning.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Metservice have just edited their road snowfall warnings, here's Arthur's pass:
Heavy rain is expected this afternoon, and should ease this evening with snow showers overnight. From about 9pm Sunday to 3am Monday, 4 to 8cm may accumulate on the road, especially near the summit.
Still a bit behind if there is already snow falling there now..

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Snow has now turned back to rain at Arthurs Pass, for now but the snow line is just above the village so I expect its snowing on the Pass itself

In Mosgiel
A vicious front here yesterday afternoon produced sudden wind gusts up to 55 knots, some tree damage, a nice gust front observed
Some light snow to 300m south of Dunedin overnight, warming now ahead of the next cold front
patchy rain to the south, 8C.

Grey altostratus layer over Dunedin currently. Touch of clear sky to the far north. Some stratocumulus to the south-east. 10 degrees with a light breeze. Hopefully it will get interesting here before dark.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
I am picking the change due through later today could be quite vigorous maybe wind gusts around 100kmh so stack those outdoor chairs, this is the most organised front ive seen in along time.
I know the MS are picking a storm risk for the penninsula but I think the front brushing up the west coast will link enough cold unstable air on the plains to produce thunder and localised hail on the wind change.
Tomorrow morning is a very typical chain shower set up through ellesmere northwards possibly a few flakes in heavier showers early am, but I do like the way the models have pulled it into the coast over the last few days.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Its a very strong blustery westerly at times here now, still sunny but wont be for too much longer if the spillover rain moves up this way.
Some people inland against the foothills are reporting light snowflakes so that must be getting blown off the mountains its that strong.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Yes. Very blustery here this afternoon with the S. Screen blown over ,yet again, despite various efforts to keep it secure in high winds. 3rd time now since Sept 10th last year. Looking a bit sad and dilapidated but it's still doing it's job.
Some overthrow rain sporting a rainbow to the east in totally blue skies. Haven't seen that, much often.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
The radar images for Timaru look very impressive maybe some sleet in that rain on the coast, some people in town reporting sleet in the rain I surpose its possible as surface and upper level winds are strong and cold enough to be pushing it right down.
Occasional spots of rain from bands moving from the west now.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
I predict the weather down here will become fine and warm soon, and there'll be no more precipitation of any kind until late December.
