General June Weather

Unread post by jamie »

She's fair chucking it down ATM. Solid continuous rain at 60mm/hr for past couple if mins. Have been sitting at 15mm/h for the last hour before this.

Strangely the radar doesn't show it very well.

The ave June max for Auckland has been around 17C and the month was frost free.

Numerous storms showing up in the Tasman Sea, where the upper cold air is meeting quite moist air.

Ya lucky bugger Dale :D

Over the last day or so i'm gotten sick of hearing people saying they are either stocking up or moving there animals into shelter etc in preparedness for what they think is a major snowfall coming, the problem as i see it is the TV forecasts are too rudimentary and end up misinforming the general public. We know that winter SW wind flows tend to deviate away from both east/west coastlines, yet TV forecasts over the last few days have shown showers both sides, most people dont know that it never works like that this time of year.

In this case its not so much hype i think, its just the TV forecasters are not been informative enough, just because a shower or two catches exposed coasts they'll indicate a showers all over.

Looks like this June will be one of the warmest on record overall. Also some high rainfalls for the north of both islands, while mostly sunny in the North Island and mostly cloudy in South Island.

Hard to argue when its clearly happening more often these days. You hear the climate change skeptics say that its happened in the past so it cant be, but there's hardly a year go by now where there's at least one month that's either close or is a new record.

Auckland had its sixth warmest June. The June pattern favoured warmer airflows, might be the reverse next June.

yeah, there has been a lack of southerly outbreaks for a while now
(hence ski fields have been lacking snow up till now )
but certainly the trend over the last few years is for warmer than normal months, month after month now

the oceans have been warmer than normal for a while now around the globe

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'June 2014 National Climate Summary'.

Warmest June on record for New Zealand

The national average temp of 10.3C was 1.9C above normal.

The month's highest temp of 22.2C was recorded at Waione on the 8th, and the lowest of -7.4C was recorded at Hanmer Forest on the 1st.

Only one climate station (Middlemarch) experienced a June mean temperature that was NOT either above average or well above average and dozens experienced record or near record warm temperatures.
