Well the hold up is a comms issue, the fibre link has not been established yet. Not sure where the issue is, could be not connected by fibre guys, or not strung up on the poles by the power guys. :)

There is a little bit of coverage on the news tonight - that will be the Maori News on the Maori TV at 7pm and 11pm, both of which are a repeat of the 5:30pm news. A few pictures and a bit of talking from Tony Quayle.

When I was there, it was just an empty pipe end where the fibre should be emerging:(

If it is waiting for the power company - they are probably working on more important things like repairing their network after the recent storms.

yes, good. but disappointing to see they are not offering the 120km radar, presumably because of their commercial imperatives, yet they don't offer us the opportunity for a retail subscription which I would happily pay for if at a reasonable price. quite frustrating!

Metconnect isnt consumer level, it could be but the charges are too high for an individual to pay out of their back pocket.

I'm told they wont be adding the 120km view to the public website.

They wont...... until there is a significant event that 'encourages them' to do so:
- Canterbury Radar 120km view - Post Chch Earthquake
- BOP Radar 120km view - Grounding of the Rena (from memory)

As an aside, some time back (3+ yrs) I had dialog with the MS, and they were indicating they were looking to launch a "consumer focussed" product to allow access to more detailed and specific data at a reasonable price-point. IMHO - I think they decided Apps for Smartphone’s met the publics needs (sorry - no additional detail for you!), and they don’t want to erode existing revenue streams by offering a cheaper way to access such data.

In saying that, maybe the App approach could be a way where they could provide tightly controlled access to more detailed data?
- An in-App purchase detailed rain radar data - That will be $5.
- Wanna see real time lightning strike information - $1 for a 24/hr period.

Or instead of one-off purchases - a subscription model could be used. Lot of possible options they could use.... Except, would they be happy having someone else (Apple et al) clip the ticket on the way? Hmmmm :-k
