cool
note though it turns out the weatherzone rain radar montage , you need to shift the whole thing west 50km
shows the tight center nicely

Sometime time ago, I tested WZ's radar imagery with MS's. What I found was that because the WZ map is squeezed vertically, i.e. a square image compressed into a rectangle, they also try to compress the round radar image overlay into an oval to match. However, that compression isn't quite the same. So although the horizontal centre looked ok, the top and bottom were out. Haven't checked it more recently though.

Wow you got more than the Auckland area did. Was there even a rain warning for Waikato?

Dry partly cloudy here , 17C.
Skies have looked unstable south of Auckland for last day or so, Cu/Cb down that way.

our local paper, the Franklin county news

http://fairfaxmedia.newspaperdirect.com ... iewer.aspx

has it that it was 83kmh winds....

well, thats well under what it would have been in this district
(most likely similar to what places in auckland that are exposed to the east received..i.e 120 to 130 kmh gusts)

but maybe they are refering to just the average speed...humm

But, your station only got around 85 km/h Brian? I thought you were exposed to every direction lol

It's interesting we were only 76 km/h here, seeing as easterly is one of our most exposed directions.

there is a ridge line to our east,....and a big Pine Tree
which blocks the wind from the east a bit for us here
(we had lots of pine needles over our driveway (like what Michael gets), from that
:)
the signal station had 110 kmh gusts but they also have a ridge line to the east of them that blocks the wind a bit too
The places that had the most damage were along the harbour edge of the district here, i.e the wind would have picked up coming across the harbour (compared to what the airport got...east for there is over land (92kmh gusts there)
The pohutakawa trees at the end of the our road had large branches broken off
I know from a westerly wind that it needs to be 120kmh or more to do that
(those trees are exposed to the east wind)

This is kinda old news now, but I had a window broken by flying debris on the night of the storm. Also, a large branch came down over the driveway and was suspended from power lines literally 1cm above the car windscreen (wonder if a zillion volts would have turned the Prius into a supercar). And, still no hot water a week later.

re the hot water, from what I understand is that for the city, that is delievered via a separate power line and controller
here in Franklin, its your normal power line connection and is controlled via a ripple pulse down that

Yes, Iv'e heard that claim as well. However, I suspect it might be based on someones best guess. Not saying it's not impossible, but that's 5 times what Castle Rock recorded in less than a quarter of the time, which does sound a little incredible.

If you've got a spare 13 minutes, here's a very good video put together by the Graf Boys (award wining local documentary-markers) of the damage, along with interviews from the locals...

P.S. Our northern beaches have been smothered in driftwood, including a few large logs (and the odd dead pig) for a week or two since then - no doubt from the Coromandel and Great Barrier Island.

The floating logs etc. must have been a hazard for small ships in the Gulf. 0_o
