Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
Yeah a north Canterbury event this one, still coming down steady with occasional heavy falls and looks like perhaps a big bulk coming down increasing over seddon etc will bring the heaviest of the falls for a bit this afternoon.
So further heavy falls north of the city with an increase to steady falls in the city, then a general easing back from tonight.
Up to 71.3mm so far here, off to make sure the Kaiapoi and Cam rivers are not about to burst their banks will probably make it into the league grounds as usual.

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
Definite sheltering going on for the southern half of the city... back to steady rain here now with 43mm in the gauge. If Jasons predictions are correct, we may be looking at 55-60mm. But yeh, definitely Rangiora northward as had the main punch of this eventRazor wrote:Police asking you to stay off roads. Only 6mm here in the last 5 hours. Not too windy yet either, but breezy enough to feel quite cold outside.

Matauri Bay, Northland. As at 1400Hrs
Over 110mm in last 10 hours
65 between midnight and 0800 - most arriving in one big lump around 0400-0600, with 45mm since 0800
...still going but easing (he said hopefully)
I blame that new Rain Attractor they just installed on the Huia
Water, water, everywhere...

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
as the front over northland rotates around the new low, its pushing south more..
so the auckland area should see heavier rain again this evening
(currently in a bit of a rain shadow from the coromandel , since the wind has gone more easterly)
barometer dropping steadily
76mm here in total now....have had enough rain now

Hmmm... hope you're right. Can't see anything heavy to the north of us yet though. I still need 27mm by midnight to break my recordManukau heads obs wrote:as the front over northland rotates around the new low, its pushing south more..

less than 5mm here all day melja, still only around 40mm for the whole event. How bizarre. The city will take the break tough!

Heavy rain event 8-13 June
I'm only at 50mm over the past 25 hours. It hasn't stopped. Not often we get continuous rain for more than say 8 hours and here we are looking at like 42 hours continuous rain being possible.
I was in mercer outside all day and about 12.30 the temp took a dive and we could suddenly see our breath. I wounded if this was due to the atmosphere cooling due to the new deepening low moving closer. And by that I said to someone this should mean we have heavy rain coming soon. Ie the low is dumping out moisture as it cools and deepens.

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
I have 61mm here in Grey Lynn. Persistent rain but mostly light-moderate.
Ukmet showing 500mb -20C air spreading onto upper North Island overnight which looks likely to allow isolated cbs to occur, mainly western BOP/Coromandel. Thunder possible.

Re: Heavy rain event 8-13 June
The Kaiapoi river had reached its 2009 flood levels with water bank to bank nearly over the top to the second bank, and flooded into the nearby league grounds opposite the Borough school.
I thought it could potentially be worse this time as the stopbanks have dropped since the earthquakes and the river is also full of liquefaction, but another tide due around roughly 11pm tonight.
The flood plains down lineside road are well and truly full this time, have only just drained away after March,April,May's rainfalls.
However this is much bigger so will take much longer to dry up, and its both sides of the road too.
Interesting variation in rainfall totals with this event even by short distance, on the NE end of Kaiapoi I have recorded 78.6mm so far for the event and just 5-8 minutes drive west in Ohoka its around 90mm of rain.
So pretty much the further inland you headed from the Waimak north the rain bands built up over land.
Pretty much a similar set up to the easter low system which brought flooding to the city, except the wind flow is more easterly this time than E-SE so just that certain angle can make a shift in the channel of the rain bands.
Something that is really hard to forecast until you know what the wind flow is doing, good note for the future .

The latest radar images for the upper north island, is the low centre just sitting below Kaitaia?
A good radar loop to keep anyway

Perhaps some heavy downpours here in the early hrs tomorrow. Persistent light to mod rain here today. It is unusual for continuous rain all day here. Temperature/dewpoint slowly dropped today, currently a cool 13C, dp12.5C.

42mm recorded for the event so far. Hardly any wind here most of the day with the sheltering effect of BP.
