Band of very tall clouds heading our way. Probably sleep through it.

Its still dark but the floodwaters are right up again , at least a foot higher than Tuesday night - probably more. The heavy rain stopped about an hour ago. Feeling for those communities which were already flooded yesterday and hoping people and livestock are safe. Looks as if Kerikeri may have had more rain than we have overnight.

There was a brief torrential downpour here about 6.50am but otherwise mostly light to moderate rain with this band.

Northland Regional Council's Puhipuhi rain gauge recorded 530 mm rain over a period of about 5 days with this system. Many other locations got at least 300 mm.

GraemeWi wrote:The Metservice site in the towns forecast has peak gust in the last 10 minutes for each 'suburb' like North Shore, West Auckland etc. It doesn't specify a better location unfortunately
The areas MetService use for Auckland are a little misleading. If you scroll down to 'past weather' you'll see where the stations are located, i.e. North Shore = the tip of Whangaparaoa Peninsular, Waitakere = Whenuapai Aero (which actually nears the Waitakere/North Shore border), Manukau = Auckland Airport, Hunua = Ardmore Aero, and there is no 'Auckland Central' - it defaults to Auckland Airport. ;-)

Nice to see winds finally easing off here at about 7am this morn. They've been gale or near-gale in the Gulf for about 5 days now. I think gusts at Tiritiri were up around 95 km/h last night and at least 80 km/h at Whangaparaoa.

As David posted earlier, gfs did a good job with this set up. But I guess when everything is slow moving with a block the model can't go too far wrong.

I got 25mm here overnight/this morn from moderate rain. Nothing unduly heavy here.

Howick is just on the edge so we just have some moderate rain. Waiheke still in the thick of it. Will be interested in hearing from you Nev :)

Blue sky to the west today, dark skies to the east, patchy rain here.
Looking forward to a better weather week ahead before another big weather system in a weeks time.

with that next wave depression formed over the coromandel, that will be ramping up the NE wind ahead of the rain band...I was just thinking it must be getting windy in the BOP

That sat-pic looks like it was taken yesterday arvo. Nice and sunny here this morn. :D
I see there was also some lightning around the BoP last night.

Ended up with 57mm yesterday, but we're at the western side of Waiheke. It looks like more eastern parts got much more going by the image below...
Yesterday on Facebook MetService wrote:Auckland: Here is an updated (gauge corrected) radar rainfall accumulation for the 24 hours until 4pm today. Those downpours this afternoon for Waiheke Island, Kawakawa Bay and the Hunua Ranges show up well, with totals 50-80 mm or so. The Watch for localised downpours has been extended until about 530pm or thereabouts for Waiheke, and east of Beachlands to Ardmore, since this front has been dragging its feet moving through the eastern part of the region! ... ^GG

There wasn't much instability in that trough yesterday but it was negative tilt which maximises any available instability. An interesting front. I recall something similar a couple of years back in July and Auckland had flash flooding.
