Its a shocker here in Kaikohe. The winds are very strong and gusty but the worst has been the constant heavy rain. We have just been out at 2am to move some more horses ( we had moved others earlier this afternoon and thought these ones would be safe ) There's far more rain here than was forecast. Now just hoping the river doesn't burst its banks - there was about another metre to go an hour ago. Luckily we still have power at the moment.

Sounds pretty gnarly up there.. have our own problems with saturated ground here on the west coast so can sympathise somewhat. Kia Kaha..

Gales/heavy rain northern regions. July 8-9th

Nothing much to note around the streets of the north shore this morning , all street and traffic lights on, not even any small branches down!
However A mate was rescued by the navy 300 Km north of Akl after they broke their rudder on the way back from the Akl to Fiji race. Lucky they were in the area..

Wind was pretty much the same strength from 8pm onwards here. Gusts up to 71 kph max. Similar to the system a month back.

We have avoided severe wind in Grey Lynn with the strongest gust 86km/h or 46knots. My definition of severe gusts is 50knots+.

[A report on Stuff at 6.02am:

"A wet and blustery dawn revealed the damage from a wild and windy night in the upper North Island."

I'd have thought it would be still too dark to reveal much then ! ]

Thinking of you folk up there.

Winds have eased a little here this morning, only gusting 55 kph at the moment.
Yesterday I got a wind run of 529km which easily beats the old record of 476km.

Still breezy in Grey Lynn with 75km/h gusts. Looks like Saturday before we get the sunshine back. Cold in the wind today.

Fairly warm this morning 13° C & still windy, was around 25-30 km/hr at times in the last 12 hours, now around 20 km/hr with gust as high as 55 km/hr. It's surprised me, the wind and how long it's been with us.

Hoping the weather will be kind to me in the Waikato this afternoon, wind/temp ok, just don't want any rain.

Lost power for about 19 hours from Tuesday night, along with a few brief outages before and after then. Blustery winds have been relentless here over the last few days and they're still going strong this morn.

Also interesting to see some places recording higher gusts yesterday than on Tuesday evening, including Whangaparaoa's 141 km/h late arvo yesterday. And although Northland has copped much higher winds with this event than 4 weeks ago, there have also been a few others a little further south, such as Akld's Ardmore Aero with gusts to 104 km/h compared to only 87 km/h last time round.

It has turned out to be a big event here. Evidently around 150mm overnight on Tuesday and the Punakitere River which runs through our place , right next to the road, burst its banks sometime in the night and didn't get back within its banks until about 5pm yesterday . Was over flowing across the road in many places. The road was un-passable for cars for some time yesterday, but 4Wds were getting through with care. Quite a lot of the road metal has washed away.
Went to Kerikeri Airport yesterday but my husband's flight was cancelled because of wind and low visibility. Only two flights got in and out yesterday. Lots of trees down on the way, but have been cleared quickly. A section of Mangakahia Road at the end of our road , was recently widened and upgraded to handle the increased number of logging trucks. The heavy water flows down the ditches on either side have washed away the sides of the new tar seal and have under- run it in places. Looks like an expensive fix.

It was raining heavily again in the early hours this morning - looks to have been 30mm plus - but luckily the river has stayed within its banks. Just drizzling now but doesn't look like there's any sunshine on the way to dry us out.

I think GFS did a good job with the forecast for this system - lots of rain in the far north but hardly any further south including Auckland. I recorded 13mm last few days, airport only got 5mm.

Yes, only 16mm here, compared to say 165-175mm at Kerikeri so far.

VHF Marine Radio (Nowcasting).
No idea what Tiritiri's highest gusts were over the last couple of days. Anyone?

We're fairly used to outages here, but because nearly all of Waiheke is on tank-water, no power also means no pumps, which means no running water. So hats off to those linesman - couldn't think of a much tougher job. A few more details from our local paper today…

This site in Northland is up to 400mm for this event http://www.nrc.govt.nz/Environment/Rive ... e=Puhipuhi
And could reach 500mm if there is more heavy rain next 24 hrs

I've been asked to extend the date range of this thread to Saturday, which seems to make sense. :-)

Yeah, 400mm over 4 days is a fairly phenomenal amount of rain!
There's a summary of a few more sites to 7am this morn in this story…

The Metservice site in the towns forecast has peak gust in the last 10 minutes for each 'suburb' like North Shore, West Auckland etc. It doesn't specify a better location unfortunately
Currently North shore is showing a peak gust of 69 kph, Waitakere 44 kph, Manukau 46 kph, Hunua 52 kph, Central 46 kph.

Cheers,

G

72kph for North Shore in the last 10 min. The more Northerly wind direction means my house is much more sheltered than previously, so I'm not really noticing it.
