Re: Auckland or Christchurch?
You're obviously looking at much older normals, as the Chc'h figure is much higher than that. Motueka (at Riwaka, actually) had site obstruction issues from the 80s and has not been recording sunshine for some time now. A decent replacement site would probably record values close to those of Nelson.NZstorm wrote:The sunniest summer location in NZ (Dec-Mar) is......

Here are some 1981-2010 normals:
Nelson Aero 970 Appleby 966 Blenheim 960 Cromwell 935 Tekapo 923 Takaka 898 New Plymouth 897 Napier 888 Wellington 886
A bit further down, Christchurch 844, Mangere 818 (Nth Shore will be higher though)

How did you find the humidity in Cairns in Winter Deano ? I notice today at 2.35pm Cairns is 24.7C with a dewpoint of 18C, a similar temperature/dewpoint combination to a humid day in Auckland in January.Deano wrote:Spring - Canterbury

Re: Auckland or Christchurch?
I was in the Cairns-Port Douglas area 2 years ago in July. No rain at all in that week. July-Sept have low rainfall averages at Cairns. PD didn't feel very humid, given an onshore breeze. Very pleasant and a great winter escape. We're repeating it in the first week of September.Michael wrote:Went there in 1993 in july it was 26c each of the 4 days but it rained like clockwork on all days for an hour or two, clearedup at night then sunny again till 4 oclock in Cairns
Means Cairns rainfalls: 29, 27 and 34 mm for Jul, Aug, Sept respectively. All 3 months , plus October, have instances of nil rainfall.

No change of site. To get numbers that low for Ch'ch Airport (it would be 50s and earlier numbers in the case of the Gardens, which stopped recording in 1953) you have to be using 1951-1980 normals or earlier. Two factors for the Airport - an improvement in exposure about 1975/76 (as mentioned by TonyT a few years back) plus I think an additional amount of genuine increase over older values (looking a bit shaky in the last couple of years or so though).NZstorm wrote:The figures I am using are older but for Christchurch both the Botanic Garden and Airport were 768hrs and out at Lincoln 799hrs.Christchurch 844hrs

Re: Auckland or Christchurch?
Went back last year for two months, stepped off the plane in early June and temps were 28 degrees with a dewpoint of 20 so was very humid for us.Gradually the temps dropped away with the SE trades blowing most of the time and the odd inland trough pushing through dropping the humidity right away, though we were in shorts and tees the whole time.spwill wrote:How did you find the humidity in Cairns in Winter Deano ? Looking at temperature /dewpoint forecast for Cairns this week it is going to be more humid than a typical Jan/Feb week in Auckland

Re: Auckland or Christchurch?
The SE onshore was present for most of our stay. Port Douglas is I think better "air conditioned" than Cairns. The other factor to be pointed out is that the sun angle was much lower than in Auckland's midsummer. This time at 1 September the zenith angle will be about 64-65 deg, compared with 76 deg for Auckland. This still makes a difference.
