Prolonged period of NW gales Canterbury July 30th - 2nd
Looks like Canterbury, mainly inland, is in for quite a windy few days. I've created this thread purely because I am interested to see how much of a variance there is wind wise throughout the Canterbury region over the coming days. Metservice has had a wind warning out for a wee while now stating 140kph winds. Looks to be coming in two bursts, the first tomorrow and the 2nd on Fri/sat.

Dead calm in ChCh, usually these events 'blow themselves out' accross the plains and don't affect ChCh at all

Seems to be quite a yellowish cast to the light so far this morning, often indicates winds coming in my experience.

We lost 6 trees in the September Wind storm last year. One large tree in that line, looks as though it may go on a big gust but we will have to wait and see.
I've got my screen propped up with bricks and other bits and pieces so it doesn't blow over AGAIN !

Breeze strengthening from the west just in the last few minutes, and I believe I'm soon going to lose the sun beneath that solid bank of cloud toward the hills.
17 degrees.

Yes. Might see a few flashes of lightning or "Wildfire" as the locals call it, in that general direction when it becomes dark.

Sadly, due to "Global Warming|", it's dying away as the system is moving north

Didn't receive anything near the predicted 150kmph wind gusts. Highest today was 65kmph. Now it's a dysmal 15.1kmph. Kind if glad it didn't eventuates as I'm not a fan of losing power for days on end

Saw some "well over the cloud" flashes to the west this evening but nothing really exciting.

Re: Prolonged period of NW gales Canterbury July 30th - 2nd
After no real gales yesterday today turned up the tempo and produced gale force winds from 3am right through until 2pm. Average speed was 100.5kmph and bigges gust was 143kmph know which took the roof off the calf shed and tipped a few trees which in turn knocked out power. Fire dept were out this afternoon clearing debri. Tomorrow is looking just as bad from early morning with the potential for 150kmph gusts. I've had enough already, my lips are dry as

Usual NW winds here, nothing exceptional. Hope that the next few days don't deliver much in the way of damaging gusts as I've had enough so far this year.

NW winds here today but more breezy that becoming gale force.
Nice lenticular clouds developing with this system
I took some foaters which I may put up later.

Biggest gust today was 68kmph so not all that bad. Tomorrow will be a different story, I think it will be just as bad if not worse than yesterday's winds(140kmph)

It's what my station has recorded and going by the damage it did to some of the property id agree with it. Keep in mind that I'm right under the hills..

My crappy old station recorded 100kmh last sept in a built up town.
Mt hut has been exceding 200kmh and he lives near there right under the foothills.

It's a la Crosse by scientific sales. Cost $649 and can record up to 200km winds. I don't know what the model name is.
Oh and it's only 2 months old

Have just abandoned a trip to Methven: dust clouds billowing up that way and very strong winds rocking the car.
