Re: General August weather
Very isolated to the coast through Ellesmere north today, although I suspect some showers might become more widespread later this afternoon .
Had a heavy graupel shower about an hour ago enough to cover the ground briefly, and the southerly has been gusting up to gale force at times too here.

The BoP Council rainfall graphs for Rotorua's torrential downpours yesterday morning are impressive...
Its city site recorded 128mm on Wednesday morning, with 87mm of that falling in the 3 hours to 11am.
And less than 10km to the ESE, its Tarawera Met site recorded 138mm yesterday morning, with 50mm of that falling in the 30 minutes to 11am.
Meanwhile MS's Rotorua Airport site further up Lake Rotorua's east coast only recorded 37mm.

General August weather
I was going to comment about the brilliant convection I could see from home over rototorua way. It looked very summery.

General August weather
Cold wintry showers with a strong southerly here in rural Taihape. Might get snow tonight but I don't think the moisture will make it here.

Re: General August weather
VUW's forecast charts show that strong anticyclone basically staying in place over the southern Tasman for most of the next 10 days. It's been a long time since I can remember an anticyclone so persistent, especially at this time of year. Spring westerlies to follow, maybe?David wrote:GFS surface pressure for midday Saturday. That sure is a massive anticyclone.

Re: General August weather
Yes, been a while since we've had a blue-dome sky like today.
A week of sunny, mild SE'ers will keep the month's average temp down to around normal though.
And usually it's a case of, 'the month ain't over until the fat-lady sings'... lol.
Long-range GFS also has a similar BFH (Big Fat High) following this one to start the spring off.

Re: General August weather
Stunning weather these last few days, and it looks like there's another week of it to come on the coast.
Some chilly mornings which warm very nicely during the day.
Yesterday was -2.9°C to 15.8°C, and today we're sitting on -2.4°C and the forecast high is 16°C.

A stunning day in Auckland too with 9C to start the day.
Check out the 7 day rainfall chart. Unusual to see 7 dry days modeled for the SI West Coast!

It certainly is this time of the year.NZstorm wrote:Unusual to see 7 dry days modeled for the SI West Coast!
Today will be our 9th day so far rain free in this stretch, and if we get the next 8 days as forecast it'll be quite a streak.
Still a long way short of my record of 32 days in Feb-Mar 2013, but considering previous Aug record was 7 days, it will be unusual.

Re: General August weather
Unusual at your end, but in South Westland and Fiordland this is the driest time of the year on average (Jul-Aug). 7-day dry spells would not be all that rare down there at this time of year.einzack wrote:It certainly is this time of the year.NZstorm wrote:Unusual to see 7 dry days modeled for the SI West Coast!

Interestingly, even Cropp Waterfall has had a 17-day (408-hour) spell with no rain at all, in March 1991.

Re: General August weather
With whitebait season upon us, the general trend has been "hosing down" so this is a nice surprise, what little snow on Mt. Davy has gone now.

We've cracked the 20°C mark today - currently 20.3°C.
What a day!
Does this mean winter has ended?

Yes. I might have to place postings up on my opposite, the New Zealand Anticyclone Appreciation Society ?Bradley wrote:Wow, nothing and I mean NOTHING on the horizon in the next 10 days cold-front wise for Canterbury, very boring period of weather coming up! Blue dome skies in Auckland. Grey Lynn is showing 17C but its the radiation effect I think.

Re: General August weather
Overcast and light rain this morning. Not bad with a surface pressure of around 1038hpa
"Anticyclonic Gloom" maybe?
Looking to be cloudy all week with this Tasman high?
