Yes. With these cold air systems, the very much coastal areas seem to cop it and also fringe parts of the foothills but nothing much over the plains.Manukau heads obs wrote:amazing how CHCH can miss out when the NI did so well

Could see the snow low down (almost to the bottom) on Mt Pihanga on the timelapse webcam looking across the lake from Taupo. Melted quickly in the morning though.Manukau heads obs wrote:south waikato...basicly the northern end of the western bays of lake taupo

only 300m was the figure posted above
I would say its much higher than that
its a fair windy down hill drive to the dam just north of mangakino

ok, google earth puts the township pf whakamaru at only 230m
which makes sense as its beside the waikato river, which has to be lower than lake taupo
but you do drop from 480m of the western lake taupo hills quickly

Yea that's makes sense. I didn't think the township was 300. I just assumed shovelopikis was close to the town but on a hill.

I can believe snow at Turangi. That was a chilly airmass.

When next week are you thinking? And do you mean for the plains or just coastal crap? I can't really see anything happening next week but I've only seen one modelMichael wrote:Think next weeks will be as bad though east of Canterbury instead.

Re: Potential sea level snow 7/8th Plus low snow next week
found out a bit more about the snow in Turangi....sounds like it must have come down from the Desert Road
Pihunga had a good covering, and right down to the Turangi, especially the end closest to Mt Pihunga
(The central mountains are just on the other side of that anyway)
the western bays hills did not get any,...well at least the southern end anyway,...

So the southerly was strong enough to cause spill over precipitation? Eg pushed the snow right over the plateau?

Re: Potential sea level snow 7/8th Plus low snow next week
sort of thing yeah...there is a gap between the central mountains and the kaimanwas, where the desert road goes...
often weather systems basicly run down the desert road and hit Turangi area....
