Some heavy rain yesterday evening.

The area of interest today is Coromandel/BOP where isolated convergence storms could develop this afternoon. But the upper trough will be departing later this afternoon which undermines the risk.

Cloud cover/lack of heating looks to undermine a possible storm set up over south/mid Canterbury this afternoon.

Looks like some showers today but then a welcome drier spell during the week.

I notice NZ daylight saving time in the BSCH model for next Sunday!

Thanks for the links to the BOP tornado Nev. The data supports tornado.

There is scattered mid to upper level cloud, but also a lot of heating with the sun generally shining here in Rolleston so could well be something especially if coastal winds get going. _b

Band of light showers seem to have just clipped southern Chch (missed St Albans)
North Island looks interesting tomorrow, with very cold unstable southerly likely to bring thunder, hail and snow to central areas. I recall reading about a similar cold outbreak in late September 1977, in which the NZ Herald reported snowflakes in parts of Auckland (probably just hail or sleet) and a hailstorm followed by snow in Matamata.

In my rating system September 1977 ranks as the worst in the Kelburn record - unusually cold, high rainfall, well below average sunshine and many days with cold southerly winds. And that was following a dull wet winter ...

Raining with fine hail or graupel rattling against southern window just before, maybe more to come judging by the nasty-looking cloud to the south. Chilly start to the day!

The problem with NZ climate is the general pattern (away from Summer early Autumn) tends to favour cool/cold flow onto NZ rather than mild/warm. How many warm northerlies have we had lately.
Dunedin has it's third low level snowfall of the year this morning.

The weather has been wet this September, looking forward to an improvement this week.

850mb temps will be on rise so temperatures should get milder this week.

Currently snowing with quite big flakes at 150m asl in Dunedin.
We have a light dusting settled.
Very heavy hail showers overnight and gales.

Good or bad ,our winter/spring/autumn weather is mostly governed by the orientation and height of the southern alps.[SW/NE] If you look at South America the Andies are Nth/Sth So the highs are blocked and reform over the Atlantic which in our latitudes would mean more extremes of hot and cold and noticeably less wind. Our highs are squeezed and pushed north by the Alps and this drags the cold air with it unfortunatly. If the SI was Nth/Sth we would have a different weather pattern altogether ie Blocking periods of either wet or dry, less wind and possibly more hail/severe thunderstorm events in the spring and early summer in the east and central areas.. Food for thought.

WOW! im impressed at how quickly the snow is buidling in the central NI. In the past half hour it looks like a fair few cm have already fallen. gone from wet to white in 30 mins.

3C, very foggy up in the mountains, but snow isn't settling below 800m or so. A few snowflakes and sleet around lake level, no accumulation.

Rather unpleasant here on the North Shore this morning. Torrential rain - 4.1mm in the last hour, but some of it probably blew right past the rain gauge, due to the horizontal nature of it. Soaked from the knees down from taking the little fella to school. 17.3 degrees though, so at least it's not cold.
