Re: General September Weather
Ripper of a day so far after a cool start, makes it 3 in a row now. Managed to get a little sunburnt yesterday afternoon but my fault for lapping up the sunshine.
No wind to speak of today which is the catalyst for me.. flat ocean, snow on the alps behind me, lovely & warm.. happy me

Re: General September Weather
A warmer than average September overall. Very wet in some North Island areas (incl. Akld), but dry and very sunny for most of the South Island.
Some very preliminary September 2014 temp and rainfall figures for the main centres:
Worth noting that Akld ended up with 147 hrs of sunshine - just 4 hrs shy of, or 97% of normal.

Re: General September Weather
Correct. As previously mentioned, all NIWA's rainfall figures are from and to 9am on the 1st. Have been for well over 100 years.

Re: General September Weather
Oops, completely forgot about that. Looking back at daily readings it was indeed quite wet between midnight and 9am on 1st Sep.Nev wrote:Correct. As previously mentioned, all NIWA's rainfall figures are from and to 9am on the 1st. Have been for well over 100 years.

Re: General September Weather
It's been interesting in the past, where events, ie., rainfall have occurred at the end of the month where traditional readings are taken at 9am. This giving totals for the 9 hours into the next month.Nev wrote:Correct. As previously mentioned, all NIWA's rainfall figures are from and to 9am on the 1st. Have been for well over 100 years.
A lot of modern day readings are taken from midnight to midnight.
I take my readings from 10pm to 10pm.
Any comments on this ?

Re: General September Weather
Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'September 2014 National Climate Summary'.
A dry month for the South Island with warm and wet conditions in the North.
The national average temp of 10.9C was 0.5C above normal.
The month's highest temp of 24.1C was recorded at Leeston on the 11th, and the lowest of -6.9C was again recorded at Middlemarch on the 28th.
Queenstown recorded its highest September sunshine total since records began in 1930, following on from its sunniest August last month.

Re: General September Weather
NIWA haven't got the message geographically yet - the Queenstown value, while very impressive, was set at the Aero site with an EWS. The town site's 1958 value of 208 might translate into a higher % of the possible, even with the slight disadvantage of being a manual measurement.Nev wrote:Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'September 2014 National Climate Summary'.

You might also find these media gaffs amusing…
The nationwide average temperature in September was 10.9 degrees above the 1971-2000 September average from Niwa's seven station temperature series which began in 1909).
- The Timaru Herald (Stuff), 04/10/2014
The data from Niwa shows September was mild for the majority of the country with only coastal Otago experiencing below average temperatures.
