Yes, quite a spectacle from here apparently. That burst of heavy rain, wind, thunder and lightning seems to have woken everyone else up except me... #-o (mind you, I had spent yesterday helping shift house).

Sunny here now, but sort of hazy out in the Gulf..

Partly cloudy here, 19C with a 16C dewpoint. Plenty of warmth and moisture to fuel storms ;)
Went for a walk around midday and it felt quite muggy.

Some very sharp readings on the radars coming up for Auckland, could be some decent sized hail stones in there maybe up to 20mm.

Thunder and moderate rain here in Henderson. Radar looks like this is just the start. Plenty of purple blobs!

Such a stark contrast to where i have spent most of this week, which is Alexandra. Every day was the same, i.e cold frosty mornings and then into 14-16degC highs during the day. Those temps felt like a 20degC day in Auckland. One assumes this is due to the lack of humidity in the airmass down that part of the country.

Anyway, hoping for a Friday night lightning show.....its been a while.

Hope everyone is well :)

I see a rotating signiture in the rain radar in the past hour, west of Northland. Looks too tight to be a low center, possible funnel?

was a really good thunderstorm here at 2:30
developed very quickly
we actually had a bit of a sea breeze developing down the coast line and so I think that was the trigger :)

Good to have your weather report from Henderson C-Nimbus.
A NE breeze here during unstable weather quite often seems to result in an afternoon Cb line forming in the west
Some showery rain has arrived here, earlier thunder rumbles out of the west.
A photo looking west earlier

Interesting to see the very heavy rain at Albany and NW Auckland didn't make central Auckland. Only 3mm in Grey Lynn

we had like 6mm in like 5 minutes here at the peak of the system at 3pm
(4.79mm/min rain rate, which is real decent)

the current rain system over us is feature less looking cloud ...could be an occluded front
there is now a NW wind change here, so that will be the reason for the rotation on the rain radar

MS have just a moderate risk this arvo from about north of the Bombay'sā€¦
MetService - Thunderstorm Outlook

Valid to: Midnight Saturday 6 Sep 2014
Issued at: 7:46am Saturday 6 Sep 2014

A low pressure system is moving slowly eastwards across northern New Zealand today. A rainband over the eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, with a low risk of a few thunderstorms, is expected to move away to the north this morning. Scattered heavy showers are likely for Coromandel Peninsula, Auckland and Northland throughout the day, with a low risk of a few thunderstorms. However, afternoon heating and convergences increase the risk of thunderstorms to moderate over these areas, which may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 25mm/hr and small hail.

Going to need good heating to get lightning today. Otherwise just showers.

Yesterdays weather was thundery rain rather than thunderstorms. Nothing photogenic and nothing too electricaly active.

Grey Lynn is on 85mm for the month already!
