Saw a couple of flights standing off in holding patterns that were inbound to Auckland, and now changing over to the eastern approach.

Looks like some more cbs off to the northwest :-)

its actually quite active with weak strikes. Seen one CG. I am seeing lots of flashes from my vantage. We only slightly just clipped it. It went to my east

I'm not sure if this post belongs here or in General September Weather: the well-defined system rotating and centred off Northland/Auckland on rain-radar at present is fascinating to see.

I could see that cb from Auckland, looked like a good multicell build up.

Not one of the better days here yesterday, but I see Blitzortung recorded a few strikes around the Manukua Harbour area about a hour or two before sunrise this morn.

Yesterday ended up a bust due to lack of heating.

Interestingly northern New South Wales had a similar set up yesterday and got widespread thunderstorms.
The 500mb temp there -21C but surface temp was 23C, dp 14C.
Waikato 500mb -21C but surface temp just 17C, dp14C.

yes, that convergence line looked good. I saw what looked to be a persistent lowered inflow base too. But thunder activity was weak.
There was a powerful upper level system crossing the upper North Island, we should have got much better lightning. The missing ingredient was heating/instability.
