Only 20mm of rain in Chch 8-o those cold mornings with dew are helping surface moisture but when that stops boy is it going to get dry.
Niwa showing a soil moisture deficit of over 100mm for here and a drought index of severely dry for south Canterbury.

we had similar rain total here as Ricky
(but using midnight reset , same as Ricky)
Also the same 0.7C above 'normal'
the last 2 years now have seen most months running above normal temperature for NZ now
even though its a weak el nino, Auckland still managed above normal temp too...for Oct..

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'October 2014 National Climate Summary'.

A dry month for some of the country with near average temperatures for most.

The national average temp of 12.2C was 0.1C above normal.

The month's highest temp of 27.5C was recorded at Riccarton, Christchurch on the 17th, and the lowest of -4.9C was yet again recorded at Middlemarch on the 25th.

(Note that Wgtn is still missing one day's sunshine data.)

The left hand hasn't caught up with the right hand, so to speak - I pulled up NIWA about October 6 (as I recall the date) being missing for Kelburn, with the help of a media manager at Metservice. The data soon turned up, and the monthly total was 226.9 hours. If it doesn't turn up in the later stat report I will have some words with NIWA. I see NIWA caught up on Blenheim after complaints from there earlier in the year.

Riccarton again after NIWAR have added their weather station there, to the national official weather sites. :-s
