Midday temps are unusually low for October today, eg 0C in Waiouru and 5C in Rotorua. Snow probably falling lower than forecast.Manukau heads obs wrote:Reports of snow settled hills around Taupo overnight.gone now though

I think today was possibly the most unpleasant weather day of 2014! Strong cold wind and squally showers. Max 13C.

General October Weather
Nearly every shower that has come through since yesterday has had some hail. Some showers have had heaps of hail others just laced with it. One shower had flat squishy hail that splattered on the window rather than little balls of ice. Is that grauple?

Re: General October Weather
That it would be!
Been much the same in Greymouth all day today, every shower being dumped with hail, mostly around pea sized but one particular shower dropped hail that was pushing into the 2cm range! Cold enough at one point I thought it was near going to snow down at sea level here.. there is plenty of it up on Mt. Davy & the Paparoa Range, usually get a blast like this towards the start of whitebait season, not right toward the end... I see we have another rain warning out for here, suits me ok to stay indoors for a couple of days, you can only do so much with a broken leg lol.![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Re: General October Weather
The big wind flows over the Southern Alps later today should produce some lightning. Maybe a strike or two further east given strength of Jet stream at 700mb.

Nice mild 19C here, sun is out now after substantial cloud cover earlier. Nice to have light winds again too...

Re: General October Weather
With an overnight dewpoint of 13-14C skies will probably cloud up quickly, lots of moisture for cloud.

Re: General October Weather
I cannot remember in recent times a more stable 7 day forecast coming up for Canterbury, nothing too windy/cold/warm/showery in the outlook at all!

Re: General October Weather
Long range the overall pattern is changing and becoming less zonal in the models. I hope that trend continues as it will mean better weather for Auckland.
