Chased today with Mike, Tilly and Aaron. Ended up around the Rangitata Gorge, saw a bit of lightning and hail, but location wasn't very chaser friendly. Don't like storms in the hills, bugger all road options and the hills obstruct the lightning. Still good to get out and hear some thunder!

Some cold upper air still over the North Island today and a low thunder risk over the kaimai ranges if the NE sea breeze can come out of the BOP.

The good news is the BSCH site is up and running again for NZ!

Another day with weak ts recorded in central NI ranges.

The update for El Nino is for it to stay weak.

Turned out to be quite a nice day today after a drizzly start.. the last couple of days have been pretty mint really 8)
Certainly has that Spring/Summery feel in the air, overnight temperatures & the lack of firewood being burnt are reflecting that.

Southerly up to near gale around Akaroa for about an hour from 11.30am, looked dark but no rain, just low cloud. Temperature sure took a dive with the wind. (was warm before, even though a lighter southerly)

Supposed to have been drizzly/rain here today but nothing of the sort, sun & more sun, which actually had some bite to it around lunchtime! :)

That front over the North Island on Saturday looks good for some decent rain, farmers will like it. Precipitable water values will be 30mm which is moist air.

Overcaste morning in Auckland but skies will clear and 21C on the cards.

Starting to get close to my highest October temp (22.7) which was recorded on the 30th of the month. We are on 22.2 right now. I don't see it getting to 22.7 but good effort considering there are another 2 weeks of the month to go.

I stand corrected. It got to 22.7 just after 4pm so equalled my record.

Quite a big range today with 5.2-22.7.

Yeah it really warmed up along the coast here.. being tempered somewhat by the Tasman didn't really do much, too much bite in the sun this afternoon for both daughter & I.. no complaints though :)

It's interesting that Reefton doesn't feature much in the nation's national highs.
Kawerau does quite frequently and that is, Reefton is in an area similar to that NI town.?

We only have a NIWA station in town - closest Metservice is Springs Junction which is quite a different climate.
It is interesting that we get our own forecast on the Metservice website under "towns & cities", but don't actually have a Metservice weather station. It's not unique, but it's always seemed a little strange.

I know my station reads higher max's than the NIWA station. I tracked it quite closely for a number of years. My average temps are very similar to the NIWA site, but I record warmer highs and colder lows. But the NIWA site has had some calibration issues in the past so I gave up tracking it and decided just to be comfortable with what I record.

I wouldn't have thought Reefton compares that well? Kawerau is somewhat further North, think it's lower altitude and also has Geothermal activity.

Looks like a chance for a thunderstorm set up over the North Island Sunday. Will depend on position of surface trough/moisture. Worth a mention at this early stage.
