Re: Prolonged strong W - SW winds starting 3 Oct
The wind has just caused a large glass panel of a shop awning in central Hamilton to fall and smash on a parked car. Yet there is officially no strong wind warning in place for here. I think that there is a case to calibrate wind warnings against what windspeeds an area usually receives.

You may have also creaked slightly in the 5.1 Murupara deep subduction quake just before too..cbm wrote:The wind is making the high rise building I work in creak and move. 85km gust at Hamilton airport must be close to a record. I see Rototua airport has just had a 104km gust.

Yes, ironic that. I was thinking the last time this building creaked and moved like this was during the 6.6 Seddon quake.

Re: Prolonged strong W - SW winds starting 3 Oct
Looks like the strongest winds have not reached any further north than the Waikato
nothing out of the ordinary here...but much stronger (relatively to what they normally get) in Hamilton
and very strong for a time over the lower NI (Taranaki to Hawkes bay)

Yes, we're getting it, and Tauranga and Rotorua, North and South of that zone, not so much, or at least not so much compared to what is normal.

Radar cranked up a few gears to the south of here ! Looks like a band of thunder and hail moving north as per Metservice's updated forecast.

Cloudy but dry in Akaroa now. Had briefly heavy rain late this morning with the initial southerly change.
MetService site down at moment, so hard to access up to date radar.

Rain now easing here with SW winds dropping away.
Annoying that I couldn't follow it on the radar, but never-mind.
Another possible frost in the morning?

..but seriously. Good to see that you had the lightning that probably redeveloped as it travelled further north from what was observed from here.

Re: Prolonged strong W - SW winds starting 3 Oct
The thunderstorms flared up really quickly and also died down quickly, so by the time we hit the road it was just a really heavy rain band with sleet and some flakes inland of Rakaia.

Yeah hit and miss chase tonight, pretty much had to stop cooking tea and just go, but by the time we got down to rakaia she had all but died.
Saw some good sleet though inland from rakaia so made it all worth it
