GFS handled today's storm set up well, apart from the fact it came a bit further south than it was showing and ruined my outdoor work day! 13mm here this morning.

AirNZ plane hit by lightning today.

Nice sunny weather here now.

Interesting cloud forms with in a situation like this, but not much weather, here, developing from this.

Few showers with some Lightning 60ks east of Mt Taranaki, isee over the past hour or 2.

Thunderstorm walloped us here, unusual for us to get one this strong... Thunder is house rattling volume! Also had a gust of 76 km/h with heavy rain and small hail

Plenty of lightning and thunder to the east now that it has passed us. Feeling colder too - Temperature has dropped 4 degrees in the last 15 minutes.

A great storm here, close lightning, loud thunder, hail and strong winds

Helluva wallop here also - just to the east of Waiheke at 12:05 according to NZAPStrike.

Not a lot to report from here. Pretty much a single short sharp shower at 4.30am. No thunder lightning, strong wind gusts or hail observed.

Chart reviewed at 8:40pm Wednesday and North Island areas modified slightly.

An unstable airmass moves across the North Island overnight Wednesday and early Thursday morning. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the west from Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula to Kapiti Coast, including Taupo and Taihape,and also for northwest Nelson anb Buller. In the South Island, the risk is before dawn, but for the North Island areas the risk extends into mid-morning. These thunderstorms have the potential to produce localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 20mm per hour, strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and hail.

In the North Island a low risk of thunderstorms extends east of the moderate risk to include Bay of Plenty, the ranges of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, and the Tararua District.

In the southwest flow, there is a low risk of thunderstorms over Southland and eastern Otago before dawn.

A trough is expected to brush past southeast Wairarapa mid to late morning and there is a low risk of thunderstorms associated with this trough.

No thunderstorms expected elsewhere in New Zealand during the period.

Chart reviewed at 8:40pm Wednesday and a risk area added in Fiordland.

A front is expected to move onto Fiordland in the evening. There is a low risk of thunderstorms developing over Fiordland in the evening bringing localised heavy rainfalls.

No other areas of severe convection or thunderstorms expected.

Got woken by the thunder overhead at midnight. I had my camera and tripod already set up to go but by the time I got outside the storm was moving on. Nothing else to report from overnight. Looks like the cold pool largely passed south of Auckland.

That was an insane short, sharp squall/gustfront that came through around midnight - 109 km/h at Whenuapai Aero and 96 km/h at Akld Aero.

that thunderstorm was good alright...it intensified alot as it came ashore here...I was like, will be over now, but was getting more and more close lightning

I was a bit annoyed I fell asleep last night and missed the bulk of that storm! My intention was to stay up for it.

wow, that is large hail for this area alright!

Yes, it was pretty willing through the southern reaches of Auckland with a short, sharp CB squall with associated lightning and instantenous thunder around 0330. Certainly an early wakeup call for the household!

Wow big hail. We had hail in the night but sounded like pea size. That size would make a racket on the roof.
