RichyDunedin wrote:Ended up with thunderstorms at around 4am, 12pm and 4pm. The last storm had alot of lightning with some good CGs and almost continuous thunder for 90 minutes. A few moderate sized hail showers but nothing special. Good luck for everyone else for tomorrow, hopefully use get a similar setup.
Thanks for the great reports Richy. _b Interesting little story about lightning vs. macrocarpa yesterday…

MS's 10:41am T-storm Outlook update now includes moderate risk for North Otago and inland Canterbury, low risk now includes Chch.

Update: Severe Thunderstorm Watch recently issued for North Canterbury/Marlborough area.
MetService - Severe Thunderstorm Watch
MetService Severe T-storm Watch Map - Oct 12, 11.13am.png
Issued by MetService at 11:13 am Wednesday 12 November 2014
Valid until 08:00 pm Wednesday 12 November 2014
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Marlborough
Canterbury High Country

Thunderstorms are expected to develop over Marlborough and North Canterbury this afternoon. These thunderstorms will have the potential to produce localised heavy rain with intensities of 10-20mm/hr and hail 10-20mm in diameter. Additionally there is a moderate risk that SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS could produce large accumulations of hail in localised areas.

Large accumualtions of hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous.

This watch will be updated by: 02:00 pm Wednesday 12 November 2014

Its the first time I have a severe watch for hail accumulation. Upper wind flows are weak so slow moving small hail.

Its going up very strong out there at the moment with some good height on the TCU and isolated CBs, a few spots of rain and a light S-SE wind.
Pretty much anywhere you look theres big convection going up, ohh so many choices  I have no doubt even those on the plains in the city etc will get a decent thunderstorm today.

Do I dare say that this one is looking like a super cell??? Can hear thunder and it's still miles away, only a few seconds between claps too. I would say that if your gonna chase today, this is the one to go after. Lucky for me it's on a collision course for my house so I can enjoy the show from the comfort of my home hehehe

Snowing here. Temp dropped from 12.5 to 1.6 in 45 minutes! Started off with hail them slowly progressed to snow. Was not expecting that at all! Bloody radar must be down again, typical. Black again to the south

Incredible picture of deep hail drifts hail in Methven on the Press page.

I would have thought that 'precipitates' a severe thunderstorm warning rather than watch!?

Probably worth moving this topic accorss to the Show week weather?

I went for a brief chase just west of the airport and sat under a convergence line, not much happening by that stage just some small hail for abit no thunder heard etc.
But its still very unstable out there I pick a good chance of further storms until midnight atleast right up through the plains, wind is now NE in Rolleston with another SW change tonight expected to bring in a third trough.

Man, that's heaps of hail! I just missed that storm, went after one coming from Mt Peel way towards Mayfield which looked good then that died too. Oh well....
