Looking like elevated storms will form out in the Tasman on a warm front today. The warm front reaches the west of the North Island tomorrow morning with a slight risk 20% of elevated thunder. Not much of a set up but worth a mention.

Chart shows 6am best (4 layer) lifted index.

Overnight low was 17.6 here. Probably would reach 24 or 25 if it was sunny today. Hopefully it won't be as cloudy as yesterday was...

Our dewpoint temperature is around 18C today so it will feel warm even with no sunshine. A cooler airmass arrives later tomorrow.
Perhaps a change of weather pattern for next week with a High digging into the South Tasman.

25C max here early afternoon when the sun was shining, dewpoint was 19-20 at the time.

Unfortunately the fan in my temperature shield has died after almost 5 years running...

Hefty downpours here since around lunchtime (got caught in them between medical appointments, can only move so fast with a busted leg..) but has laxed off somewhat now.. possibility of thunder has been thrown around but it's too mixed out for that I think. Low cloud/fog settling in now, hasn't been overly warm but the dewpoints have been up there.

By examining my graphs it appears to have died overnight - the temperature line is smoother than usual for today only. I've contacted Davis NZ in Hamilton about it this afternoon, they are going to get in touch tomorrow about which product I need to buy to replace it. With summer coming I'm fairly keen to get it replaced quickly. I just hope they will have them in stock

Absolute mental rain & winds here in Greymouth right now.. I've been through some weather before but this is up there with the best of it.
I'll eat my hat if there aren't any slips or localised flooding in the area..

Yes, Dale, the Westland Radar is picking it up quite well. Any lightning?

No lightning I know of but it is just flogging down relentless John.. I hear of a rockfall this side of the Cobden Bridge.. the turn off to here & north to Runanga/Westport.. a couple of boulders the size of small cars and assorted rocks have tumbled onto SH7, shoulder only affected, but it is the same place as the monstrous fall a few years back.

I bet you have a spider in there that has tied up the fan.
It has happened to me before, just open it up, or join 2 cotton ear buds together and stick it inbetween the FARS plates to free up the fan rotors again.

Stayed relatively warm today, drizzly warm frontal rain this morning and this evening.

Yes, I know where that rock fall is
It was quite bad when we came over there on a Morris Dancing tour in 2010.

Still looking like a cold snap/snow Sun-Tues in the south and a break from the weasterlies for us up here for a while. Good thunder/hail setup for us too on Mon/ Tues with cold upper air and December heating/convergence. Too early to get exited though[If history repeats the next runs will show the trend back to SW and a bust, fingers crossed]

Thanks for the idea, just opened it up but that wasn't the issue. Strangely enough I was able to get the fan running (weakly) by holding the solar panel directly towards the sun though. Put it all back together again but I will have to wait until late morning for stronger sunlight on the solar panel to see if it actually runs OK again. Probably worth getting a new one anyone, the fan in recent months has sounded a bit weaker and more rattly than it used to.

Another warm night here last night with 16.7C min.

Likewise.. ended up throwing the windows open around 4am as it was rather opressive, not often you get t-shirt & shorts weather at 8am over here.

Yes, I'm thinking the same thing, as long as it isn't a disastrous bombshell like last Saturday. 8-o

FWIW, with a lot of fans I encounter, so long as it isn't emitting horrible noises related to a bearing failure, I lift up the sticker, remove the C clip, pull the fan off and clean the shaft and fan, lubricate with silicon (CRC 808), and refit it all usually with the same sticker. Can make a huge difference. Remember to clean any silicon off the sticker's surface before trying to refit the sticker.

A broad polar trough crossing NZ with thunder risk from Waikato to South Canterbury on Friday. But nothing too remarkable, a rumble here, a rumble there, some small hail. Not the set up we are waiting for! But the weekend or early week might throw up something considering the upper levels will remain cold with shortwaves crossing NZ during that period.

The best numbers for convection tomorrow are around the the top of the South Island so a hail risk for the growers there.
It doesn't take very big stones to wreck a crop.

Weather looks quiet for Auckland. Fine today but the southwesterlies look like being the cloudy type in the coming days with a shower about.
