Could see a light sprinkling of white on the Port Hills (quite low down too, say about 200-250m) earlier this morning, but gone about an hour later. Not sure whether hail or snow. (low cloud cover many of the hills, so couldn't see the full picture)

I'm willing to bet it was snow...and hail

Looks like the city is into the Banks Peninsula 'shadowing' effect this mornign with more east in the flow

EDIT 1:30pm true to form the weather gods made a mockery of that statement, now very damp in town, no wind its not going anywhere fast. Even some red in the radar

Just had a short downpour in St Albans. Lighter rain now.

Orchardists in the Motueka area not too happy, describing a 20 minute hailstorm from around 9:30pm last night as either 'the worst in living memory', or at least since a similar devastating hailstorm on exactly the same day in 1996…

Jeez it was cold in central otago this afternoon. Ended up spending most of the day in Ida valley at 700m. Had a sleety shower this afternoon.

Would be interesting to know the size of the hail if there are any reports out there. I suspect about 15mm size hail, big enough to damage crops but not very big (based on met conditions).

Severe thunderstorm warnings have fairly low value to growers as its not like they can cover crops. Of more value to growers could be an indication of hail risk a couple of days in advance.
