Yeah! It really nuts over here with high cloud, or As thickening out with a few spots of rain and the occasional "Surround" sound of thunder to the north to NE, possibly along that weak convergence.
Mind you the sound of thunder has eased, probably something to do with the lack of lightning o_O

Thought I'd register after lurking for months. Possible hook echo out near the foothills?

Edit - probably got ahead of myself there, but it's still very interesting on the radar.

Just biked home out east and lots of hail on the ground and surface flooding, must have been quite heavy.

After hearing the thunder to the north from Templeton, drove to Dawsons Rd towards SH73. Saw a few CGs but only managed a capture from the horrible dashcam footage during the last burst of lightning. By the time I set up a camera it had stopped again #-o Just light rain and almost dead calm there.

Lots of As layers from this thunderstorm development and light winds possibly due to high surface barometric pressure and lack of sunshine to increase instability.
Any hail, heavy rain must of been quite local, through these gaps?.

Coming back to Chch from Akaroa late this afternoon. Could see the black cloud to the west/northwest, but couldn't see any flashes. (kept visualising them, as it had to be a thunderstorm) Wasn't expecting it to move onto Chch though.

Definite white coating at my place in St Albans, nowhere near a foot deep. Heard it was really bad Riccarton side of Hagley Park.

Any photos? A foot deep sounds unbelievable.

2km up the road has 2cm snow on the ground. Looking very dark to my SE and is heading directly for me. I'm excited, 2.3deg and dropping

Unusual weather situation over us at the moment. Not so unusual the afternoon thunderstorms/hail developing inland, but this seems to be combined with a southerly airmass cold enough for snow to quite low levels.

Willoughby & I had a similar experience in Temple View, Hamilton. Waitangi Day 2006, took us quite by surprise, but it was very localised. Heavy rifts of hail in places where it had been rain washed.

that hailstorm developed on a convergance zone once again right on the city.
I sat on the south side of it where it was blowing a light SW and on the other would of been a NE
Had that NE not been there tonight i doubt much would of happend except stayed inland.

Matt i get the feeling that maybe an echo.. such as a heavy burst of snow falling around the high country??

Wasn't the best chase, very few opps to photograph anything tbh. Lightning, hail observed, pretty much took the same route as Jase but in the opposite direction!

Cycled through the hail core down Innes/Heaton/Glandovey Roads around 6pm, was quite heavy. Still a fair amount in places when I came home after 10pm. Hail was mostly pea sized, at most no larger than 10mm.

First time I've core punched on a bicycle! :P

Some nice shower activity moving inland at the mo, looks like a SE but they are still very slow moving. Also I see Ashburton is only on 5C and dropping with rain falling, could be some more snow around higher elevations of the plains? Got 15mm in yesterday's showers which fell as very sleety rain/snow and on occasion dry snow. Tis a bit late for this sort of weather me thinks
