Our satellite data is about to get a whole lot better. The JMA have successfully launched and put into geostationary orbit satellite Himawari-8 on October 16.
The main benefit with the new satellite will be 10-minute full-disk scans over all bands. And resolution to increase for the infra-red scan from 4km to 2km. (The Japan domain will get 2.5 minute scans!)
A full list of the enhancements: Good guys BSCH ( http://realtime2.bsch.com.au/currentwx.html ) are working to get a handle over all this extra data and will hopefully be ready for when it comes operational mid next year. (Most likely as a subscription service).
