Re: T-storms risk - Sat 22 Nov
Low level wind change ahead of the main front seemed to kill off any chances here in Mid Canterbury.Building to the south again now.

Re: T-storms risk - Sat 22 Nov
I had a report of thunder west of Timaru around the middle of the day. An elevated storm coming across from the Alps.
The expected development on the southerly buster isn't eventuating which is typical in these situations.

Is anything going to happen up town way, or are those boil-ups going to stay in that river that they're currently in?

Gee this thunderstorm forecasting thing is fickle. Metservice is brave to even bother with that risk map and severe watch set up they do.

Yup Thunderstorm forecasting is fickle, but wait till around 5PM or so, before casting judgement.dogmelon wrote:Gee this thunderstorm forecasting thing is fickle. Metservice is brave to even bother with that risk map and severe watch set up they do.
Also meteservice doesnt base judgement of the GFS alone, there are heaps of models and model products that are not the in the public domain (i.e that Metservice, BOM and other Meteorological organisations have have pay for).

note that the southerly change you have is only a surface feature currently

Re: T-storms risk - Sat 22 Nov
Looks like nothing is developing on the wind change as it moves through Canterbury, the Metservice high risk/ possible severe is with that southerly wind change.
Certainly warmed up there ahead of the change.

Re: T-storms risk - Sat 22 Nov
I see Metservice still have a severe thunderstorm watch up for Chch, the southerly went through there two hr ago.
They should atleast update their outlook
