Re: General December Weather
NCEP has a big issue on the Download servers regarding the GFS and other related data sets, all parallel download feeds have been suspended and everything is running on a backup server which is increasingly under strain.
This may result in the GFS being unavailable on some websites over this weekend.
So if you notice that Metservice or any other website that does model runs, might not have GFS data over the next few days.

It was one of the warmest nights for a couple of summers with a low of 22deg,bit of a sheet kicker as Jim would say.

Re: General December Weather
I was wondering why the BSCH model page was stuck on an old model run. The WeatherOnline models seem to OK though.Tornado Tim wrote:NCEP has a big issue on the Download servers regarding the GFS and other related data sets, all parallel download feeds have been suspended and everything is running on a backup server which is increasingly under strain.

A grey cloudy morning here, warm 18 degrees last night. GFS suggests we'll get about 40mm this evening/overnight.

Re: General December Weather
Another dull day in a very drab month here. Going by the forecast to the 22nd, the MTD sun to then will be lowest bar one (2001) in the last 60-odd Decembers. Ironically, the cold Dec 2006 was one of the sunniest - I know which version I would rather have.

December started good here but has been unusually cloudy last week or two with maximum temps on the cool side.
Looks like isolated thunderstorms possible in the Auckland area next hr or two

Re: General December Weather
On the topic of Christmas weather, looking like an easy forecast given a big high will dominate the weather for the festive period. Warm temperatures for most except the north of the country where there will be a coolish easterly. Auckland is sheltered enough by the Coromandal though so good weather for the city of sails.
Alexandra will be the hot spot on Christmas day with 30C. Hot conditions on Boxing day for Dunedin with temperatures topping 30C.

Fifth straight day of weather predicted wrong. Last 4 days were meant to be wet but were fine, today's meant to be fine but drizzly.

Just started spitting in St Albans. Looks like showers spreading to most of Canterbury, even some thunder inland.

Re: General December Weather
I see there was an isolated thunderstorm over North Otago this afternoon. The first storm for December for eastern South Island, it's unsual to have to wait until the 21st to get a thunder occurrence.

Re: General December Weather
That was nice. We have had a heavy shower of rain that got the gutters full quick smart. They were big drops and there is zero wind. We hardly ever get these in situ showers.

Re: General December Weather
Been thundering away for the last hour here, but nothing major, sounds more elevated and distant than nearby. Some light to moderate rain but nothing heavy.

Re: General December Weather
Yes. showery weather now developing from the west and moving across.
Much cooler now, which interestingly enough, I thought that today would be overcast and cloudy with a cool southerly flow over us for much of the day, reducing MetService's prediction that it would get up to 25C today.
...but it wasn't and it was warm early this afternoon but cooling down when the lower cloud moving across as these showers move across. Conflicting wind flows causing rain and possibly some instability resulting in a convergence sort of system, which lightning could occur in a cloud.
