Looking towards Auckland City from Takapuna, looks really dark and menacing. My colleague just witnessed lightning. I just received a pre-production sample of a Blunt umbrella I'm thinking of ordering for my company - looks like I'm about to get a really good opportunity to test it out.

Yep best thunderstorm here in a while! Lots of lightning and thunder. Still rumbling in the distance now. Here is a pic I took of the rain-free part before it hit (didn't have a good view of the rainy part)

You tube clip of the waterspouts in BOP last night. These were the classic text book, non mesocyclonic waterspouts.

Headed over to eastern Waikato mid afternoon, observed scattered heavy showers and the odd thunderstorm.

These CB cells seem to be more fruitful that the useless cells off TC, the other day.
Why do Auckland and up there get the lions' share of TC development and not here [-X

The storms I observed in eastern Waikato had plenty of thunder, intense rain but a poor lightning show :-)

Auckland has had a stable summer, this being our first storm since December. I think the whole of NZ including the West Coast has been below par for activity.

Nice captures spwill.

Drove through showers (not heavy, but big drops) bringing in a Mobile Dental Unit late yesterday afternoon. Apparently lots of thunder, but I didn't hear any and saw no lightning. Certainly some impressive looking towers and dark clouds as you went under them.

Have to say those NIWA climate maps are a complete joke, they show between 20-50mm this month for my area north of the waimak, a soil moisture anomaly of normal and drought code of normal.
There has been little rain of note and nothing has changed from 6 weeks ago, its still dead brown and dusty and the Ashely river is coming into its 3rd month of being bone dry when the Niwa maps show a rainfall anomaly of 140-160% in the head waters of that river.
I think Chch aero is around 11mm so hardly normal.

Readings from my station:

Ave temp 16.7°C
Ave Minimum 11.4°C
Ave Maximum 23.9°C
Minimum 4.8°C on 5th
Maximum 30.3°C on 2nd
Rainfall 16.4mm

Another dry month which makes summer 14-15 the lowest of any 3 month "season" (from autumn 2002) that I've recorded with 54.8mm and almost half of that was December. The next driest season with 71.4mm was spring 2014 so that makes only 126.2mm in the last 6 months... The average for spring + summer is about 250mm.
